These tools use layers to add, remove, and modify images. (See the preceding section for more on layers.)
TIP
To quickly remove a single layer, select Layer⇒Layer to Layer List. Press the DELETE key on your keyboard to select the layer and remove it.
Enhancing Photos with Retouching Tools
The retouching options within Photoshop help you modify and enhance images. Some of these options are no longer considered part of the regular Photoshop package, but they were once a part of Photoshop’s included trial version. Adobe dropped the included trial version as of CS6 (Creative Cloud) and the current version (CS6) of Photoshop and Camera Raw. The included version is now called Adobe Photoshop Elements and is still available for purchase.
Photoshop Elements is actually a suite of advanced editing options with a base price of about $200. It includes effects, filters, and adjustment layers that are available in the Photoshop Creative Cloud (CC) version. See Chapter 15 to see how Elements can be used to create and edit those and other effects.
Using the software’s basic photo retouching tools, you can correct most problems you encounter with your digital camera. Correcting problems is always easier than creating new ones, and Photoshop is the best way to do both. Retouching is a basic technique that involves low-cost and easy-to-use tools to correct problems.
Introducing the Retouching Tools panel
The Retouching tools appear on the right side of your screen. The tools work best when they are visible, which is where the Extra Large Retouching Tools option is located on the Options bar (as shown in the figure). Each tool shares a common toolbar:
Effects: Used for general image correction, red-eye removal, and noise reduction.
Color: Used for adjusting grayscale and red-eye levels.
Shadows/Highlights: Used for correcting dark and light areas.
Highlights: Used for adjusting highlights.
Blacks: Used for adjusting shadows and for handling issues in the dark areas of an image.
Curves: Used for adjusting the overall color of an image.
Effects (Advanced): Used to create additional effects on the image.
Noise: Used for reducing noise.
Blur: Used for reducing the effects of camera shake, such as a hand-holding shake.
Vignette: Used for controlling how dark

Photoshop is a program used to edit photos and create images. The first version was released in 1990.
Features of Photoshop
It is one of the most widely used image editing tools available in the world. Many photographers use it to edit photos, convert RAW images to JPEG, create images and edit photos.
Adobe Photoshop is also used to create images, web designs and graphics for webmasters.

The Photoshop program was originally designed by John Knoll and introduced in 1990. After many years, it was released as a stand-alone program in 2011.
Adobe Photoshop features
Adobe Photoshop includes a wide range of features. The most well-known features include:
Painting, retouching and contrast
The main feature of Photoshop is the ability to edit color and lighting. You can use the brush tool, the airbrush tool, the soft round brush tool, the paint bucket tool and more to change the color, the brightness and the contrast of your images.
You can also add and remove elements from images and change the area and position of objects on a canvas.
There are filters that include blur and shine effects, the oil paint filter and the non-destructive layer editing tool.
You can also apply several effects to one image, such as a vignette, lens flare and many more.
Adobe Photoshop also includes vector tools that are useful for creating web designs and graphics for print-on-demand and animation.
Image analysis
Image analysis tools are useful for spotting any problems with your photos before editing them. You can use the photo histogram to see the distribution of your images. You can also compare, convert, resize and add metadata to images.
Adjustment layers
This feature enables you to edit images in layers. For example, you can use several adjustment layers to change the contrast of your photos, adjust the brightness or add blur effects to your photos.
Organizational features
The features of Photoshop allow you to organize, archive and store your images. You can also edit and share them using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.
How much does Photoshop cost?
Adobe Photoshop is available in a range of different editions with increasing levels of functionality. The full version, which includes all the features and additional software, costs around $1,299. But the beginner version is free for non-commercial use

The Tilt-Shift Lens Effects can be used to enlarge an object, creating an effect similar to a lens camera. The effect can be removed after the enlargement.
The Burn Tool is used to remove the background color of an image. For example, you can use the Burn Tool to remove the background of a photo of a teapot.
The Brush Tool is the primary editing tool for creating new objects. Brushes are used to create various effects, such as painting, spattering, texturizing, and filling.
Brushes can be grouped and transformed by dragging them with the mouse. There are also a variety of preset brushes. You can download free brushes at www.adobe.com/photoshop.
The Smudge tool is used to paint colors or textures onto objects. The effect can be easily adjusted by dragging the brush. The smudge tool can be used to blend objects into the background, to create abstracts, and to modify color in an image.
The Clone Stamp tool allows you to copy and paste pixels to create or clone out objects. This is useful for repairing damaged or corrupt images.
Select objects in an image using the Lasso tool. The Lasso tool works by clicking, holding down, dragging, or clicking while dragging. The selected area is called a selection. You can copy an object or area of an image by selecting the area and pressing Command+C (PC: Ctrl+C).
