The year is 2021. Humanity is on the brink of extinction after the first and only war of the 21st century. An international group of scientists set out to solve the world’s environmental crisis when they stumble upon an experimental, humanoid robot from the future. Unfortunately, this robot escapes into the past and is lost forever before they can return it to its intended timeline. Six years later, G-String, the last human on Earth, finds this mysterious robot on a Russian spaceship. She takes it upon herself to give this unknown, man-sized machine the best life it’s ever known. Is there a way for you and G-String to see that world through?

    Ahead of Telltale Games’ new title from Game of Thrones creators – All] – The Wolf Among Us, the studio’s previous hit graphic adventure in which you were so mad you actually had to play it twice, it’s worth looking at how these mechanics were changed.

    In a piece for the Telegraph about The Wolf Among Us, developer Sam Barlow writes about the ‘second-time-around’, or Disc 2 point, which is what Telltale Games does with each episode.

    Instead of killing enemies to gain experience, pay points to level up, or using ‘Sparks’ as a currency, here, the payoff is more text-based, with Game of Thrones addressing the player’s actions.

    In all, the second playthrough allows players to further flesh out their characters, make more (or alter) their choices during what would have been their playtest session, and point the way to future decisions.

    Here’s how Barlow explains why the second time around is so important for a story told via such a medium:

    ‘I think that adds another layer to the whole package and is completely unique to the medium,’ says Barlow. ‘The same story can be told in countless, diverse ways – in comics, on film, on stage – but unique stories are harder to convey in comics, easier in a film.

    ‘It’s unique to interactive storytelling that you can customize that narrative in different ways, from the events in which you participate to the way you play through the game.’

    Of course, once again, it’s not so much that the second playthrough adds new features. It’s that Telltale changes around the things that it does well. That’s Barlow’s point: that every bit of messaging gets a chance to come back a little bit differently depending on your actions, and that the second time around makes a real difference.

    Like, say, that one point at the beginning of Brimstone. Brimstone doesn’t offer you the chance to do it again.
