Viewing two or more images at the same time can be tricky when you’re designing; it’s hard to get a sense of perspective. The Perspective feature, shown in Figure 22, is new in Photoshop CC 2018. It makes it easy, by taking all the dimensions (or perspectives) into account, to see a single, accurate representation of the composition.

If you’re new to Photoshop, Auto-Align Layers (see Figure 23) is a nice time-saver, letting you align an object or set of objects to a predefined element in another layer (like the horizon or sky). You can also reposition and rebind the layers you work with, so you can quickly look at the project again. The stamp tool (see Figure 24) is a powerful, fast way to make your own unique work of art. You can even scale it up to larger sizes and tweak its dimensions. When you’re done, you can easily output your files to any common output format, like JPEGs, bitmap, or TIFF.

Until that happens, Photoshop Elements offers the best and most effective raw file processing, conversion and output capability I have seen in any software. It offers a robust, feature-packed editing platform, and does a masterful job. When coupled with Adobe’s newest AI algorithm processing, handwritten text is handled at unbelievable speeds, and even the removal of blemishes via the Quick Fix feature, that keep the photo looking pristine (but not perfect), works incredibly well. It really is amazing that this is free.

This is also a great program for someone who is already a Photoshop expert. It doesn’t ask much in terms of skills, so if you can use Photoshop the way it is traditionally designed, this is the program you should use. But if you are a web designer, packaging specialist, or an amateur photographer trying to refine your skills, you’ll enjoy Elements much more than when you got started. When you create artwork, you’re essentially changing the colors of millions of pixels. Each pixel can be changed individually, or you can apply an effect to an entire section of pixels. Those whole sections are called layers, and you can change the color, blend the colors, and move the layers as desired, to build your artwork. You can add special effects, such as a gradient, to a layer’s colors or blur the edges of the image to soften the image.

To produce your masterpiece, you need to digitally remove unwanted parts of the image. This is called trimming and is done by using a cropping tool. With a photo, you can choose to remove an area in front of the scene, the back of the scene, or across the edges of the scene.

Photoshop’s selection tools handle all aspects of layers and image editing—making selections, adding text, adjusting editing, merging duplicate layers, etc. Photoshop includes several selection tools. The most common is the lasso tool. You can move, tweak, and “tickle” a point using the lasso, making selections based on the point and associated area. Since the lasso tool is so useful, it has many pen (aka lasso tool), brush, effect, path, and shape tools.

One of the easiest ways to make a selection is to hold down the Alt key, which turns the tool into a selection tool. Alternatively, you can click once to make a quick selection, then shift-click to make a more precise selection.

Photoshop’s Liquify filters allow you to abstract shapes, distort underlying layers, and shape and reshape target layers. As you move a selection or selection tool over an image you can trace or draw, affecting the selected area on multiple layers with the same attribute. This is perfect for creative visualization. There’s also Flatten, a useful tool that efficiently reduces the number of layers in a given, multi-layer document.

You can now also utilize your Artboards for automatic retouching of images and warp a portrait. Additionally, you can play back your image and add effects like a vintage or dream effect. There are now expanded draw and paint tools that allow angled lines along the edge of your images. (Please note, because it’s so easy to use, Elements is rarely considered user friendly. If you’re looking to learn new skills, you might want to try other applications instead.)
