I hate to review something that I feel can’t really be fixed, but I have to point out that I never pointed out any fundamental problems with Lightroom, nor did I mention any bugs. No fundamental flaws exist in the program, which is exactly why I gave it a score of 9. I do feel that there are a few missing features, especially with regard to the X-Trans raw converter, but even so, Lightroom is better than any equivalent non-Lightroom package, which of course Adobe is trying to sell you. It’s better, faster and more practical. Paintshop Pro and Skive are closer to Lightroom in certain aspects, but they are much worse in others, and only Paintshop Pro can use RAW files. And even that blows – it recommends RAW conversion for everything, it does not actually offer it in the package. So why do I think it’s such a good RAW converter? For first things first, it’s much more straightforward than Lightroom: everything you want to do is there, right in the user interface. It makes no excuses, and so it recommends and does a fantastic job of RAW conversion – it does everything it’s supposed to without cramming it into a bigger application with loads of features for the sake of marketshare. For the simple fact that it’s faster than Lightroom, it should be – it does not require you to run its complex algorithms by yourself to convert the RAW file before saving it. It’s always been that way and it should stay that way. Lightroom on Windows keeps falling behind as Windows scales up and processing power adds additional threads. Years of programming and development have gone into it, but when is the last time you had a case where Lightroom opened up faster than Photoshop? The reason is that Photoshop has a pipeline. It has layers, layers, layers! Lightroom doesn’t, so it’s always going to have to run the whole shebang before you can move on. Think about Red Giant “Adobe Rush”. It also has layers, layers, layers. But if it isn’t in the pipeline, it’s not doing anything. So most of the time, you’ll be waiting. AWB takes a while, even testing comes with a bit of a lag. And so it goes with just about everything. But the upshot is that you get there sooner, and that’s the main reason most users prefer it. The reason I rate it the best is very simple – the way Adobe has designed it. Lightroom feels like a completely stand-alone application, but it’s more like a highly tuned utility tool that derives its speed from its flexibility and the Cloud. Photoshop, on the other hand, has a deeper learning curve, and the tools are less intuitive by default. What you do while viewing a photo in the Develop Module is done through the right of a button, and for some people, that’s to the point where it’s a little tedious to get used to. This is also why I think that Paintshop Pro is a closer match than Skive. It’s more streamlined, and you can do more in it, because it gives you more tools. With Lightroom, unlike with Photoshop, you are prompted to perform more actions. This one of the aspects I love about Photoshop – it never gets in my way. You can go about your work without any additional prompts even if you apply adjustments to the same layer or to different options in the Layers Panel simultaneously. In RAW conversion, however, Lightroom ignores my decisions, takes no responsibility and just converts everything without asking.
