Adobe Photoshop supports a variety of file types. The most common are.psd,.jpeg,.jpg,.tif, and.png. There are many more file types you can import, export, and save. There’s more information on the file formats and their uses later in this chapter.
Working with the Layers Panel
The basic building block in Photoshop is a layer, which enables you to create objects on your artwork. Each layer is a transparent image that you can move, scale, and resize, as you see in Figure 4-2. A layer contains a selection and sometimes a vector path, which means it usually shares the same underlying raster data as other layers, like paths or selections.

The layers panel is a tool that enables you to work with layers. To access this panel, choose Window⇒Layers. Figure 4-3 shows a top-down view of a layered drawing. You can also open the panel through the panel menu or by pressing the menu key and choosing Window⇒Layers.

In a layered drawing, each object has a background color, a foreground color, and a layer name. For example, in Figure 4-3, the image layer is green, the layer mask is white, and the layer name is MyImage.
Selecting layers
Selecting an individual layer is pretty simple. Simply click the layer name in the Layers panel to select it. To select multiple layers, use the Selection tool (S) to select them and then choose Edit⇒Merge Visible. You may find this last step necessary when you want to combine two or more layers as a single object.
Editing layers
Layers have a red, white, or blue dot at the bottom-right corner of their thumbnail to show the layer name. When you click the dot to change its color to red, white, or blue, the background color of the layer changes from white, green, or black to that color.

What are the features of Adobe Photoshop Elements?
1. Adobe Photoshop Elements provides both interactive and non-interactive tools. While the interactive tools work similarly to those in Photoshop, the non-interactive ones are slightly modified to accommodate to the way digital cameras have evolved. While many image editing tasks in Photoshop can be performed in Photoshop Elements too, the interface is quite different.
2. It has a simple user interface. It does not have the Photoshop-like easy to use interface with the touch of a button. It has several combinations of menu-bar, panels, toolbars and tool options to perform a variety of editing tasks. It is quite difficult to be a beginner with the complicated interface.
3. It has some features that you can’t find in Photoshop. For instance, there is a RAW converter, a photo editor, a creator of custom file types, etc.
4. It offers a basic feature of enhancing images. It allows you to adjust colors and saturation levels and adjust the images according to your style.
5. It supports various file formats. While Photoshop supports just about every format, Photoshop Elements supports some raw image formats used by high-end digital cameras, such as the Canon RAW format.
6. Its file size is much smaller than Photoshop. In other words, it does not require high-speed internet to work. Moreover, the progress bar will adjust itself so you won’t have to worry about that.
How can I learn to use Adobe Photoshop Elements?
1. Most people learn Photoshop using Photoshop as their digital camera is of better quality and requires a professional tool for designing and editing images. Just as we learned Photoshop, we need to learn Photoshop Elements using its tutorial videos. However, these tutorial videos focus on the non-interactive editing tools.
2. You can also open images in Photoshop Elements and start editing right away. This will get you accustomed to the interface and you will learn the workflow without having to watch any video tutorials. In this way, you will learn how to perform the most important editing tasks in Photoshop Elements as you perform them.
3. Another way to learn is to check out the YouTube videos of Photoshop Elements users on the topic you wish to learn

The present invention relates to the field of protective clothing which is heated by a single battery powered heating device. More specifically the present invention provides a high output energy saving heating device for protective clothing in the form of water repellant, fire resistant garments.
The general public is increasingly aware of the need to protect themselves from the dangers of carbon monoxide and smoke inhalation, and other sources of heat produced within enclosed vehicles. The consequences of this lack of protection have been witnessed in recent public events in which large numbers of people have been killed within enclosed vehicles as a result of fire.
Previously, the only sources of heating for protective clothing, such as “fire suits”, were internally contained heaters, either of the gas or electric type, which tend to be dangerous to wear for extended periods of time. More recently, however, although these approaches to heating continue to be used, there has been a marked move away from the use of such techniques for reasons, which include the risk of explosion, and in particular the fire risk.
An improved heating device for protective clothing has been developed which overcomes the foregoing difficulties of the prior art by providing a small, lightweight, highly efficient heating device which can be worn by the user within the protective clothing itself and which operates to heat the garments or spaces within the garments so as to keep the wearer warm and protected.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided an electrical heater for use with protective clothing comprising:
a housing having an internal cavity in which an electrical resistance heater is enclosed;
a power connection for being coupled to a source of electrical power, said housing being sized to encase a wearer’s body;
a dry battery located within said housing and being in electrical contact with said heater;
means to control the supply of electrical power to said heater thereby regulating said resistance heater in accordance with a control algorithm;
said resistance heater being controlled in accordance with said control algorithm in order to maintain a temperature within said cavity which maintains a wearer’s body temperature above a predetermined minimum temperature;
said housing being sized and shaped to be worn comfortably by the wearer inside the protective clothing and said cavity being sized and shaped to facilitate acclimatization of the wearer to the local environment.
Preferably said control algorithm comprises a logic process which commands said heater to continuously deliver heat to said wearer, while generating within the control algorithm a number of possible states of duty and a number of operating and safety instructions.

Does it make sense to have a redundant database server?
I know that having more than one database is a common practice to guarantee high availability and because of that replication is commonly used.
But what if you have a single database that has a backup server that is regularly used to restore it from time to time? Does it make sense to use this for replication?
In other words, is having a redundant database server worthwhile?
A:
It only makes sense if you have a database that does not support replication.
That said, it does make sense because it lets you use the same backup process to restore from the database (the backup server) to your test database (the live server). This way you won’t run out of time running the restore process, which can take hours.
The reason your test database needs to be on the same server is that you don’t want to lose access to the live database.
If you aren’t concerned with downtime, you could also use replication and still gain most of the benefits. This is done by taking a transaction log backups, for instance, from the test database to a slave database and then starting the replication to the master database after the transaction log backups are restored.
In either case, if you do this, you’ll want to setup the databases to be configured to allow for fail-over if the server your backup process is on should fail.
