I was initially disappointed to see that my brush settings were cleared every time I opened or changed brushes. However, this was actually a convenience in switching between brushes. I was not disappointed to see that the new Live Corners feature is available via Live View and Undo. This is great. I really didn’t know about this, and it surprised me to see it in action here.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6 is the first version of Lightroom that I’ve worked with that supports the Artistic Collection feature. Lightroom has been making good strides in that area, and the company’s decision to add Artistic to Lightroom 6 is well thought.

Having said that, I’m not entirely convinced that it’s the right move in the long-term. I remain unsure that I’d want to switch to the next version of Photoshop with the Artistic Collection and alternate working memory approach. There’s a reason why Lightroom 6 is branded as an “upgrade,” while Photoshop CC is not. That gap leads to a major opportunity for Lightroom to remain relevant even as Photoshop struggles to adapt to the changes in art and distribution over the years.

Where I really like this new version is in being able to improve the way I work. I use the new Grid tool to add objects or layers with more organization, since I tend to have a bunch of large objects stacked on top of one another.

Elements is capable and more user-friendly than Lightroom, though. Live Edit is kludgy but serviceable and very good at handling standard adjustments. LR4 really has to be the king of the RAW generation and, in general, the best editor. Lightroom is very stable and high quality, though, and it’s a really good staple for anyone who hasn’t yet ventured over to Lightroom.

What It Does: The Paths tool can be used to create advanced selections, such as paths or the negative of a selection. You can refine the geometry of selections, move them, and modify them freely in this tool, which means you can use them to draw, erase, or change the color of any transparent or black areas to create shapes and channels.

Once your image is the way you want it to be, you can add effects to it to turn it into a final print or Web image. You can add text, layer layers, and filters, such as the Templates, Black and White, Glow, and Film styles, and even warp or distort parts of your image.
