Changing the characters of a string to a sequential of numbers

this is more of a logic question than a coding one, but I hope you can help me anyway.
I have a directory with many files which contain a character string for the number of days in the file.
So in the file, 1 is 1-1-1, 0.1 is 1-1-1, etc.
