Using Regular Expressions to match text on one line and its next line

I am trying to use regular expressions to match specific lines within a file. The first line contains a block of text that should be ignored. The next line contains a number of terms in some sort of searchable order.
The block of text could be something like this:
BLOCK ONE

The text to the right of the block is what I want to ignore and match. I want to search through this text and find any instances of “xyz” where “xyz” is the text to the right of the block. I know that I can ignore the line altogether if I just want to find the first instance of xyz, or if I just want to find all instances of xyz, but what I really want to do is match any instance of xyz, anywhere in the string. So for example if the block of text above is a string and the line that follows it is “This is a great book”, I want to be able to match “This is a great book” because that line has “xyz” in it.
I’ve already found how to match a line that contains xyz using the following regex:
^.*xyz.*$

Now, to get at the text to the right of the block I’ve been trying to use the.*$ metacharacter to find the end of the line, then do a back reference using.*xyz.* to find the match, but that is getting me nowhere. If I try this with the code I’ve provided above:
“^.*xyz.*$”

I get the error

Invalid regular expression near index 3.
