How AutoCAD Came to Be

Originally, AutoCAD was a free version of the now defunct CAD System 200. The CAD System 200 is considered to be the first commercially available CAD system. Its development began at the Texas Instruments manufacturing plant in Dallas, Texas. The CAD System 200 was developed from an app, called MELCO, which was originally intended to control an industrial robotic arm. Instead of being used by a human operator, the CAD System 200 was used to control a machine. The name CAD came from a rotating control device that represented an industrial drafting machine called the “CAD-A”.

CAD System 200 was the first commercially available CAD program and was later rebranded as AutoCAD. The CAD System 200 was the first full-featured, integrated CAD application to be released as a DOS/PC application and was one of the first applications to be released for the newly emerging Personal Computer.

In the late 1980s, CAD Applications were bulky, expensive, and difficult to learn. The CAD System 200 solved many of these problems with its easy to use application and solid, simple command line interface. CAD System 200 also helped give rise to a new category of business application — CAD.

AutoCAD was the first software tool to generate 3D drawings based on 2D drawings. It was able to import all of the data required to complete the drawing directly from the drawing file. One of the first commercial CAD applications, AutoCAD was one of the first to incorporate a 3D perspective view when creating 2D drawings.

AutoCAD was also one of the first professional CAD applications to be delivered as a subscription-based product. Rather than being marketed to individual users or developers, AutoCAD was sold through subscription-based companies who gave you access to a library of AutoCAD drawings. The first company to offer AutoCAD as a subscription was Autodesk’s subsidiary, Autodesk Inc. (now Autodesk LLC). After its acquisition of Autodesk in 1999, Autodesk kept the subscription-based AutoCAD, while Autodesk’s main product line evolved from AutoCAD to AutoCAD LT and then AutoCAD R14.

Drawings storage and rendering
Most AutoCAD models are stored in 2D-Bounding Boxes (2DBB) which can be represented by a B-Rep. Some models are stored in 3D-Bounding boxes (3DBB) which can also be represented by a B-Rep. In most cases the model is rendered by the interface. Models can be kept for further reference, but they cannot be edited except in simple cases. They are stored on the hard disk in a binary format. Usually, the use of a database is avoided to prevent scalability issues. AutoCAD has a command-line interface to import and export models in file format DXF. This feature was deprecated in AutoCAD 2013, but still supported in 2016 as well as the Windows Software Development Kit (SDK).

Facebook continues to be embroiled in a debate about its image of embracing free speech, after several cases of individual Facebook users facing removal for content that has not been deemed illegal have come to light.

Last year, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg apologised for “mistakes” made by the site when controversial right-wing American commentator Milo Yiannopoulos was booted out for his invective against women.

Following the furore, Facebook announced it would begin to “publish the name and content of anyone who goes through our partnership programme”, in an effort to streamline the policy processes and help users get access to content faster.

This week, it came to light that the site has already approved 39 applications to the programme, and some of the deleted content may be pertinent to Australia’s national debate on gun control.

Submissions to the system have included a page that appeared to endorse the right to shoot migrants, and a post lamenting the demise of a “free” Australia.

In other cases, users and the pages in question have shared jokes about the terror attack on the Boston Marathon, the actor Heath Ledger, and a parody page making light of the Charlie Hebdo shootings in France.

While the social network has not yet revealed how many submissions have been rejected under the new guidelines, a spokesman said the vetting had already been completed before the application was submitted.

“People have submitted applications, and some of them have been approved,” he told ABC News.

“But no one has been removed because of one of our new approvals.”

The spokeswoman said Facebook would not respond to questions about why the applications had been rejected and simply reiterated what it had said before.

“We want to make sure that the people who have an account have a voice,” she said.

“And so we’re following our guidelines that say if we find something that we think is likely to violate our guidelines, then we will follow our guidelines.”

But the decision has prompted criticism from some in Australia, with the government announcing this week that it would push back the dates for public consultations on gun reform, to include internet safety.

Federal Attorney-General George Brandis said the government would defer its plan to allow internet giants to introduce content moderation systems into their networks.
