Tablet and phone users can now unlock their devices remotely using PIN or fingerprint verification, thanks to Google’s latest Android security update.
The update, available for all Android devices running version 6.0 (Marshmallow), added the ability to protect against direct attacks from malicious apps, such as malware, via the lock screen.
With this, all applications will now have to work through the standard Android authorization system in place to receive permission to lock the screen.
The latest Android security update, which was rolled out this week to the Play Store, includes several other tweaks and improvements.
One of the changes is that the system now tries to warn users when apps have tried to access device data without permission.
“To try and ensure that you don’t mistakenly give a malicious app permission, we notify you when an app has attempted to access information on your device without your consent,” said Google.
“It’s now possible to block apps from accessing your personal information, such as your location and photos, without your consent. And if you’re worried about an app using up your data, we’ll give you a warning if an app is trying to make a data-heavy request that requires a substantial amount of network and battery.”
The update also includes a new option that allows Android users to automatically back up their personal data and settings. The backup option can be found under Settings->Backup and reset and is user-friendly.
The last option that was added is new A activity that is aimed at developers who want to develop different apps for Android devices.
The new activity includes APIs, which let developers to create different types of apps, and a new Java library, called ART, which is designed to make it easier for developers to create apps.
