fortunately, crysis 3 can be played without the hunter mode, and it actually feels a lot better that way. the capture-and-hold mode lets you play a game of hide and seek against a host of enemies. the objective is to navigate through a tight network of walls, using your suit’s abilities to instantly teleport to safety or perform a headshot. another favorite of mine is the classic survival mode, which lets you try your luck against a host of foes in what amounts to a flatter, more open environment. there are three difficulty levels for survival, ranging from extreme to expert.

crysis 2 is, in short, still a wonderful shooter. its flaws, however, are amplified significantly with the hunter mode added. the ultimate goal of the game is to earn yourself the title of nanosuit hunter, but as a shooter it feels far less satisfying than its predecessor. the capture-and-hold mode is an interesting diversion, but it’s not really a fair mode for testing your skills. the survival mode is a game in its own right, but its drastically less satisfying than crysis 2s survival mode. the hunter mode is, well, glorious and a blast to play, but it also makes the game far less playable than it could have been.

but the overarching story of crysis 3 is a bit more complex, and requires the player to pull back a bit from the scenery. on the one hand, you play as prophet, a special forces operative tasked with retrieving the ceph’s core sample, which will help scientists map out their new homeworld. but at the same time, you’ll be pitting your skills against that of the ceph, and most of the action will take place in their refineries and alien compounds. you’ll still be able to locate enemy ceph operatives through heat signatures and make use of the nigh-indestructible nanosuits, but the bulk of your gameplay will involve a careful, stealthy approach to the objective and then a more direct assault once your target is reached.

the campaign plays out like a linear, open-ended game that gets harder and more intense as you go. the world of crysis 3 changes as you play. you get to control more and more of the environment, and there are various things that affect the world and the characters. there are also a bunch of places to go, and many of those are pretty cool. you can get drunk in a giant whale, jump from the top of a building, or do a bunch of other cool things.
this new crysis has a lot of things that the previous one didn’t. it has a lot of weapons, and a lot of ways to use them. it has a lot of different ways to get around. it has a lot of places to go. it has a lot of things to do. it has a lot of monsters. it has a lot of different characters, and they’re all cool.
and so, finally, the modding scene has a game worthy of its efforts. this mod is called crysis 2 hunter, and it’s the most purely awesome mod ive ever seen. there are a few other mods that make crysis 2 look like a goddamn vampire hunter game, but the most impressive ones don’t have the same impact. this mod, though? this mod is so complete, so over the top, so gta-esque in every way that its enough to inspire you to cut out some of your own fingernails and start trying to recreate it. and you know what? i say why not? why not feel like youre playing a rockstar game, eh?
the mod includes over 80 weapons, mods, vehicles, and armors, with a hefty focus on the compound bow. in fact, so many bow-oriented things are included that it feels like the designers crammed a gta:v mod into crysis 2. the bow can be expanded, too, with its own missile system, along with various regenerating health options that can make even the most brutish of foes seem as if they have some form of human sympathy.
