in the absence of a gold-standard method for sprint training, the current literature offers no specific recommendations on the most effective method of sprint training to maximize training adaptation. the most commonly observed adaptations in sprinting are improvements in maximal velocity and acceleration. various sprint-specific methods exist in the literature, but data on their effectiveness in helping sprinters maximize their sprint-specific performance are lacking [ 86, 109, 110, 111 ]. the most effective method to maximize sprint training adaptation and reduce injury risk in sprinting is so far unknown.
in the preparation phase, the aim of the sprint training program should be to gradually introduce more speed and acceleration into the training program. this typically involves increasing the speed of the first sprints of training sessions, gradually increasing the number of sprints performed in training sessions and during the preparation period, and gradually increasing the total duration of sprint training. the average weekly training volume should be reduced during the preparation period. depending on the training philosophy of the coach, this is typically done with either longer recovery periods between sprints or less sprints per session. high-volume, low-intensity sprint training is recommended during the preparation period to ensure a sustainable training stimulus during the competition season. the coach should monitor the sprint session and adjust the sprint load to ensure that the sprint load is appropriate for the current and projected sprint-related performance.
