by the time the amiga came to be, the pc had proved itself as a game-changer. the full potential of the new multimedia devices was still in the future, but pcs had already proved their value as more than just business workstations. the “pc” was now a generic term for any type of “computer” one had to attach storage and peripherals to make it useful. many potential users of such a device were not interested in spending their money on a machine that did the same thing as another. and as long as the terminal was a terminal, not the whole experience, the lack of multimedia, which was a feature rather than a bug, was less of a problem.

when the amiga was turned over to turner broadcasting in 1994, it was no longer dealing with a single company with multiple divisions; it was now operating as a consolidated whole. in addition to having more manpower than amiga, they had more money, too. commodores bid to have early access to the new amiga 3000s, to which they paid more to the design team than they had ever paid amiga itself, but sadly, they also lost. possibly in hindsight, turning the amiga away from multimedia would have been a mistake, since multitasking and multimedia applications were a natural fit after all. certainly an operating system that allowed the seamless switching between video and games would have been a boon to the entire tech industry. still, commodore just didn’t have it in them to do that, and soon enough, the amiga had been fully replaced, first by the mac and later by the pc.

enter the cracker. the idea of the cracker is simple. take something thats been cracked before and re-crack it, usually at a lower price, so that the original purchaser can have access to it too. in the case of dean corbetts journeyman, the idea was not to crack the game at all, but to replace the blank version with a version containing the full documentation and all the original game data. in most cases, the cracker simply recompiled the game with the additional data and the original disk image was completely untouched. of course, the temptation to crack games was immense, and the crakers, such as dean corbett, realized there was a great deal of money to be made selling these cracked games to other people. this is how the whole piracy market was born.
