Introduction

After selling FIFA 20 as a package that included the ball physics, in-game enhancements, development kits and most of the new FIFA Ultimate Team content, EA Sports is addressing all of these areas in FIFA 22. The motion capture technology is something new and combines physics-based ball physics with the game’s engine to give players an unprecedented level of control over the ball. With the launch of the ball physics and EA Sports DICE’s Bloodlines expansion adding new tactical layers to the game, FIFA 22 comes with a lot of new gameplay.

New Ball Physics

The inclusion of the ball physics is an important part of the FIFA experience. Like all other aspects of the game, it is there to give players more control over the ball during play. All ball physics actions – controlling the movement of the ball, such as flicks, chips and dribbles – can be performed with the direction pad and right analog stick, leaving the left analog stick as a method to hold the ball.

The ball physics in FIFA are similar to what we’ve seen in other games – for example, the control scheme for a player will be more like a controller-based game with the right analog stick as a directional pad and the left analog stick as a “tap the ball” method, as seen in the first trailer for FIFA 22. A great example is when players flick or chip the ball: you can choose to flick the ball with the right analog stick or the left analog stick. The choice is based on your position and your proximity to the ball. The motion mapping of the ball physics allows for a low-latency environment that allows players to perform the most detailed ball control actions.

A new feature for FIFA 22 is Multi-Touches. This adds a bit more dimension to the control scheme. The new Multi-Touch feature will allow players to use two methods of control, such as a tap on the right analog stick and the left analog stick to control the ball in some instances. Players can select this mode by using the right analog stick to flick or chip the ball and the left analog stick to hold the ball, or vice versa. The decision to be made by the player is how the ball control method will be used.

The FIFA ball physics also share some similarities with the Player Impact Engine, which creates realistic ball interaction across all areas of the pitch, enhancing and changing players’ reactions to a ball when it strikes them,
