7. to experience god is to experience joy: he who has a life in christ and a christian life, has joy, and a joy which is the source of all real happiness. [4] a man who lives in this way, a christian and happy, is also a sociable person and enjoys friendship. he is a disciple, taking pleasure in what his master is pleased to teach and to accept, and therefore is an encourager. he, who has life and joy in christ, is a cheerful and responsible person. [129] no more or less than this, we can and should be. if something in this joy of ours falls into disuse, it can be restored by us with the help of the grace of god. the cry of the bible is for us all to experience joy, for this to become a permanent and integral part of our lives.

this is why the teaching of the church’s magisterium, in the light of the scriptures and the tradition, presents the hope of peace and reconciliation between god and man. the gospel brings us into touch with a god who desires peace and justice, and this desire is visibly present in the life, works and words of jesus, the paschal mystery. there is no obstacle which can prevent us from recognizing that the lord’s way is the only one which is capable of bringing lasting happiness, both to individuals and to society as a whole, and that it alone can overcome the suffering caused by sin and restore humanity to its true dignity.

104. in all our activity, we must never lose sight of the fact that jesus christ is the only basis for social justice. he opened our eyes to the true face of the world, the face of god and his neighbour, and this truth is expressed in the proclamation that we are all called to love god and our neighbour. as the apostle goes on to say, it is that spirit of love which liberates and submits to all human authority, and it is through that same spirit that justice ultimately manifests itself, for it is god’s will that every form of injustice should be ruled out. indeed, we realise that all inequality, all untruth, all violence, are displeasing to god; and this knowledge is an important step towards ridding ourselves of blind enthusiasm for everything which seems to be in our favour or to be a source of self-satisfaction, and towards the inner conversion which can only be brought about by a true reawakening to our true dignity and our true freedom. self-realisation depends first of all on being given over to god and the total and unequivocal abandonment to him; therefore we can do no justice to our neighbour if we think that we can find satisfaction, honour and a meaning to our lives by dominating them, exploiting them or being hostile to them. there is no justice apart from freedom. this is why i affirm the value of communities which, reflecting the gospel’s values, take account of the notion of subsidiarity, of the vital importance of the family, of the dignity of work, of peace and collaboration. indeed, is it not because we are men and women of peace that we can work for justice and equality? [1] therefore i urge catholic social workers and politicians to rediscover in all their activities the spirit of justice and love, and to give a coherent testimony of this, through their profession of the faith, which is not only a reflection of the church’s teachings, but also a clear sign of their membership of the church herself.

10. the secular world has known its share of values which have struck a chord with people and helped to improve their lives. this, however, is not an easy task for the church, for it knows that the way of the lord, as well as the way of the cross, is the way of holiness. in the not too distant future, it will be our task to explain why this way is the true, authentic and only path to the fullness of human life and happiness. the secular world is changing, and the church is called to change with it. the church must now make itself available to the world, to all people, not just to its own people, and so it must be open to the way of the world and to its own traditions. the church must accept its present and engage it in dialogue in order to understand it and enter into its rhythms; it must make itself strong and secure, and be able to offer an alternative to the world which is not simply a reaction to it. this will require a process of self-examination and the courage to admit the lessons which the secular world has taught us. it will require a renewal of our spirit of holiness, a renewal of our inner life which will be reflected in our behavior and our community.
68. we cannot say that the church is old and the world is new. as long as god is at work, as long as new and unpredictable situations emerge, so long will the church be young. the first christians were the first to spread the gospel of the kingdom. today we are called to do the same. the ancient churches of the east were not as static as they sometimes appear, but they followed the same course of development as the people around them. this happens in the west too, but not to the same degree.
