the same is true of the franchise, since it’s probably still the most expensive to make. dice had a hell of a time with quantum of solace, and the fact that it looks so much better than the previous two bond films (which is a lot harder than you’d think) is a testament to the enormous studio backing that the franchise has been receiving over the past few years.

in a movie that could be dubbed 007: 007 strikes back, all the previous franchises best elements have been tossed aside in favor of a long, epic action movie. as the writers are the ones to blame for this, it remains to be seen if that approach will pay dividends in the end. once again, the franchise has turned away from bond’s roots by discarding much of what made the series work in the fifties, sixties and seventies. for example, the first two bond movies contained little or no gadgetry, and were often critically attacked for it. the most recent bond, skyfall, relied heavily on new technology to add a “real” edge to the story, the latest outing is playing much more like a buddy action flick where bond is just a supporting character in the action. the filmmakers have decided that the mission has become too important, and have elevated bond to the main character and put him in danger, something that was not the case in all the previous films.

mendes keeps the main plot setpieces from the previous film but slows down the pace considerably. since we see more of the film’s events than we did in the previous one, the movie is less rushed but more grindingly relentless in the pacing, which makes it way too long and hard to sit through.
