not so with auto-tune. auto-tune does not introduce a new sound—it has always existed. it’s just become more powerful and more accessible. but the idea that the singer is transcending the instrument he or she uses is novel. as a result, there’s a lot of speculation among musicians and fans alike about how to use the effect. but the key to the auto-tune effect is less in the sound than it is in the way it is applied. here’s how i think it works: the singer’s performance is mostly in the way they use their voice to create melodic lines, and the plug-in is used to smooth out the edges. the singer’s voice is not as important as the effect. as a result, a singer’s performance doesn’t need to be brilliant to be effective. it just needs to be convincing.

this is the reason that auto-tune works so well with rap and r&b. the vocals are already pretty much simple melodic lines, and the auto-tune effect only increases their complexity. the auto-tune effect is an instrumental effect, but it’s only as good as the instrument. in rap and r&b, the auto-tune effect isn’t really used to add any new layers to the song. instead, it’s simply used to give the singer a little more control over their voice.

by the point he finally released the effect’s full potential on his 2004 debut album, the sideline story, t-painwas already a household name. despite the fact that he would later build a brand with the auto-tune plug-in, he had never started out by vocalizing with an effect. even before he signed his first deal, t-pain signed a deal with elektra records, whose a&r guy was none other than jimmy iovine, a rapper’s rapper who also had a foothold in the pop world. t-pain took to the studio and the other albums in the first decade or so of his career would all feature an increasing war of influences between r&b, hip-hop, and electronic music, with the added influence of auto-tune. the sideline story would become his first album to see him achieve widespread appeal, and its commercial success would be, in part, a product of the sweet spot he hit with auto-tune that he never intended to create.
t-pain released his debut as a 40-year-old and on an independent label. the same year he released his debut, the standard was being revolutionized by jay z and kanye west. unlike those artists, whose albums were part of a cycle of albums that were all music, t-pain was interested in expanding the possibilities of music. of course, he would still keep his associations with the machine and they would subtly influence his style. it’s not as if a lot of the stuff on the sideline story is exactly cutting-edge, however it didn’t play any small part in establishing t-pain as a pop star. now if you haven’t heard any of his music, you haven’t missed out on much.
