Although it’s easy to get started with the application, choosing to work in Photoshop can be daunting at first. You can either begin with version CS or CS3 or jump right in to CS4. The Photoshop CS4 learning curve may be taller than the Empire State building, but a solid understanding of Photoshop CS3 is all you need to get started.
In this chapter, I guide you through the Photoshop document so that you can create your own first piece of artwork. You can, of course, jump directly to the exercises and projects contained in the chapters that follow.
Photoshop, like any other software, consists of application tools and commands for performing tasks. In Photoshop, this includes the selection tool, the eraser tool, the paintbrush tool, the lasso tool, the create brush tool, the mask tool, and some other commands for creating and changing an image. The more you use the application, the more familiar you will become with Photoshop’s menus, tool palettes, panels, and workflows.
Navigating Photoshop
Photoshop is a solid and powerful tool in that it provides a user-friendly environment for working with graphics, but you can’t manipulate an image or create artwork without some basic knowledge of the program. Here are some of the key items you need to know in order to get started:
The top of your screen is your home page; it lists the menus and tools you use to create your artwork.
The Photoshop palettes, shown in the margin, are omnipresent. Palettes are divided into the following categories:
• The Image menu, shown in the left panel of Figure 2-1, provides all the tools you need to manipulate and add new layers to your image.
• The Layers palette, shown in the right panel of Figure 2-1, allows you to see and work with all the individual layers of an image. When you create an image, you usually create a base layer, which is an empty canvas. You then create other layers containing tools, image parts, and details.
You can select a tool in the palette and then press Shift+click or press the Enter key to make your selection and return to the palette.
The Quick Selection tool, which is your primary selection tool, is a sliver of a box that you click with the mouse and then drag around an object. See the next section for more on selecting and creating a selection.

Photoshop Elements can edit RAW images. It is a multi-tabbed software application which has five main tabs that are accessible from the main menu. The first three are based on the original Photoshop, but the last two are for photo editing.
Left to right, the tabs in the Elements desktop application can be found in the main menu.
The top tab can be accessed by clicking on the “Edit” from the main menu, shown in the following image.
From this tab the user can open any image file in the program. This includes importing and opening files from.JPG,.JPEG,.GIF and.PDF formats.
The tab also has common image editing tools.
Photoshop Elements is quick and easy to use. It provides an “Image” menu that contains almost all of the basic image editing features like crop, resize, red-eye reduction, sharpening, exposure, brightness/contrast, noise reduction, and others.
The tools have pre-defined settings or you can adjust the settings in small steps. For example, you can adjust the sharpening by moving the slider to the right (of the default setting).
If you click on the “Edit” tab at the top, you will be greeted with the “Basic” tab.
Photoshop Elements has a couple of pre-defined editing tools.

New in Photoshop Elements 13.2
There are many interesting new features and improvements in the Photoshop Elements 13.2 version.
Camera Raw-enabled
A new and exciting feature is that Photoshop Elements 13.2 is equipped with an In-Camera Raw development environment. This feature will let users to open images in Camera Raw mode right inside the application.

“Leagues” in the Book of Mormon
In the Book of Mormon (Mormon, Ether 3:26), the prophet Nephi explains the original language of the Jaredites before they left Jerusalem.
Yea, he did cause our fathers, who were scattered upon all the face of the earth, to come into the land, which had been promised unto our fathers. And he did give unto us a land that was choice above all other lands. Yea, he did cause our fathers that they might remember his covenant, which he made unto our fathers, that he would be their God, and they should be to him a people. (Mormon, Ether 3:26)
Are “leagues” mentioned anywhere else in the book or in the Book of Mormon? I can’t find a definition that would include a “league.”

The Manual on ‘Ensignments’ has a definition for “league”, which explains the concept of Leagues and enables you to see that the Book of Mormon does not make any reference to them:
League — A group of people who live together, particularly in
association with a common purpose. This is the primitive equivalent of
the modern church, and like the church it is to be governed by the
presidency of the twelve apostles, with the authority to direct and
to rebuke, define, and dissolve the league as needed.
In practice, the book refers to the institutions already in existence. The individual member of a “league” would not be directly associated with what is called a “league” in the Book of Mormon.

I remember once having a very dark red sparkling wine that I thought was way too red.
When I poured the wine out of the bottle, the liquid looked almost black when it reached the surface.
This is what is known as the “wine glow” or “red shine.”

Review: ‘Man of Steel’
Famed director Zack Snyder’s first hour of “Man of Steel” is a loud, brainless and mostly forgettable barrage of a title that practically forces its message on us, and then actually has to fight us to get it across. Even an early scene in which superpowered Clark Kent crashes his car, stumbles out and starts shouting “My name is Jonathan Kent! I’m from Smallville! I was born on August 10th, 1964!” might have worked better had it been channeled into a charming, heartfelt and self-assured mid-’60s humor.
In a rare example of Snyder’s care, production designed the look of “Man of Steel” to mimic the appearance of its characters, which was a welcome change, especially when the movie is populated by a handful of mostly ugly suits. However, what it lacked in polish it makes up for in the qualities needed to succeed in the movie biz: action, emotion and a good story.
The movie is set in the future, just after Superman’s death — a decision he made to turn himself in to die alongside the woman he once loved, Lois Lane (Amy Adams). A conspiracy of masked villains hatched to preserve Kryptonian technology, led by General Zod (Michael Shannon), is undercutting America’s faith in him, and General Zod wants to bend Superman to his will. Without his abilities, General Zod is trapped on Earth.
His solution: Find another Superman. A soldier in the U.S. military who dreamed of becoming a superhero and served in Iraq (Russell Crowe) has returned to his home on a quiet Kansas farm (a “Kent” house?) where he’s been on the verge of succumbing to alcoholic ailments and depression.
He relives the birth of the hero in his living room and becomes Clark Kent again, as he jogs and runs through the streets of Metropolis, the city his parents once lived in before they moved to Smallville and raised him and his adopted brother. To find a way to preserve the human race, Clark mentors government astronaut David Lane (Antje Traue) and recruits a super-powered Kryptonian, Kal-El (Henry Cavill).
But if we weren’t clued to this fact already, the film’s marketing campaign, which has played up the “superhero movie,” shoehorned in Superman plot lines to
