When it comes to Final Fantasy Tactics, a niche strategy game, I’ve always had a thing for “RPs” or Recordings. A record of you play through a game, one that is kept using a tool called What OSR! Shadow Tactics is the darling of indies. It’s one of the few that actually makes over $10,000 a month on the Steam Store. Other games, even big ones like Thimbleweed Park, have dipped under. Shadow Tactics has this inexplicable appeal to the community, one that is probably best explained with some context. Shadow Tactics started as an indie title funded by Kickstarter. However, although it was largely well received, the campaign was not successful enough, and the development team had to resort to other means of financing. Luckily, a studio called Stunlock Studios came around to offer assistance. I’m willing to bet that many players don’t even know who Stunlock Studios is.

Here’s the thing about Aotearoa, the world of Shadow Tactics. In its built-in details, it looks like America. It’s got the high altitude skyscrapers, the high density population, and the canals. However, if you look at the world, you’ll notice that it’s not America.

The table-top RPG mechanics are brilliant – the neat way you can use stat moves to directly affect the fighting element of the game (with the occasional special move) is a neat way to blur the line between in-game and out-of-game actions. But those are just by-products of Shadow Tactics’ exceptional controls and beautiful hard edge-to-edge pixel art. Its tough, seamless, fast-paced combat, smart and advanced stat system, and a fair amount of environmental puzzles are equally well-designed and polished.
The story starts in the distant future in the factory that produces the most powerful weapons in the world. These weapons are called the Blades. When people are about to die, it’s just a matter of getting hold of the nearest Blade and hitting the kill-button. The Blades also work when people are in danger. They are so powerful that they destroy the evil monsters. The evil monsters are called demons. The Blades destroy them and save the world. That’s all that’s required, that and a strange energy that can be tapped by a special group called the Striders. The Blades weren’t always the way they are today. They were produced by goblins, who originally made the Blades for themselves. Even though they’re all evil monsters, the goblins are lazy. They don’t really want to use them, but it’s too late now. They even don’t really know that the Blades also work on people. They made them for themselves, and they’re not even using them. Demons have ravaged the world so the goblins now have to live in the factory. The factory isn’t really a factory. It’s called the Hellgate. Demons prowl around outside, and that’s why they’re called demons. They want to kill the goblins. Demons can’t only kill humans, they want to kill every living thing.
