in this article we’ll take a look at the best free software for recording and mixing stereo. this is a fairly broad topic, so please note that i’ve just looked at the top of the list. i’ve left a few notable freeware plug-ins out of this list because they are only useful to some people or can be very expensive. i have also not mentioned virtual plugins because these are not free but are in my opinion just as good.

if you’re not familiar with the term “stereo expander”, it basically means widening or narrowing the stereo image. as mentioned above, this is very useful in many ways. here is a list of some of the best freeware stereo expander tools available.

first, create two separate stereo channels. place an insert fx at each channel. make sure they both use a single mono track and are set to mono for the processing. the insert fx should be a m/s encoder. as this is a stereo channel, the m/s encoder needs to be set to stereo processing. then, in the m/s encoder, set the stereo width option to create a stereo image. set the panning of each insert fx to the center of the stereo image. in this way, the two signals, left and right, are routed to their own two new channels and the image is created in the centre.

to set this up, create a stereo track and choose the reverb plug-in. set the dry/wet mix to 0/100 and set the panning to the center. then, in the send box of the reverb plug-in, route the input to the reverb and output 1 plugs and route the output to output 2.

the stereo width is now created on the output of the reverb plug-in. you can now create further stereo images with this plug-in, so it is very easy to create a stereo image using this plug-in and a stereo image from other plug-ins, even two or three plug-ins in a stack. its also easy to change the panning of the images, as there is only one plug-in involved. the audio can be routed from the outputs of the reverb plug-in to stereo channels in the daw. for me this is the perfect tool to create a stereo image, especially when using reason with my keyboard and vocals.

diy audio modular dsp (midi, audio and cv inputs) allows for a variety of control surfaces, such as the sz2 shown above. opinions vary as to the quality of this module, with the price having a major bearing on that. however, in its price range, it has more than enough to justify its cost. if you are looking for a way to expand your cubase ai installation, consider the use of this module. m/s routing is available and beyond the scope of the software, so the module also enables me to insert mono signals into the stereo channel pair.
cubase ai is a very, very handy product, with a vast array of useful features. however, the initial price is a little high, especially in the free version, which may be just a little less than a bargain at the price. for those who are willing to take the chance, there are some very useful features that make the product more than worth the cost. however, the whole issue of ai being used without a free upgrade is a bit of an eye-opener. cubase ai free is only really useful in a limited way, as the amount of content is very large, even by the standards of steinberg. getting past this may be a bit of a mission for some.
the steinberg team have decided to take a new direction for cubase ai, and it has resulted in a package that is considerably more focussed and useful. it is not quite as complete as the full version, which is perhaps not a bad thing. the free version, however, is already a fine package, and is worth a look.
this product is extremely useful, and is the ideal way of expanding the steinberg stereo expander 22. one of the problems with the previous version of this expansion device is that it is not in a position to be used as a stereo expander. however, the free version of the stereo expander 22 can be used as a mono expander, which is not the same, but is very similar. this new steinberg product, however, does have the additional benefit of being a stereo expander, with the front panel outputs facilitating its use.
