the script was very good. like the first two films, it keeps the characterization down to the kids, which, in turn, makes the adults more vibrant. the film at times resembles lord of the rings, but there is a definite narnia feel to it. it should be noted that the film changes the chronology of the trilogy a bit. in the books, the voyage of the dawn treader was the first of the four and the last of the six. here, it is the sixth of the six. in the films, it is the second.

i felt the story might have taken a bit longer but i think that was mainly because the earlier chronicles were read to me with each book ending with “and all was well.” this is not the case with the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe where it ends with “and all was well.”

so how much fun was it? sure, there were a few quibbles. the most obvious being that the warner bros. studio took liberties with the narnia world, especially in showing the scientific details in the forest and beyond. and, the film was taken to the point of elementary school children reading along with the audio book (probably an excellent idea) and the visuals go way, way beyond our childrens’ capacity to understand the depth of the interpretation. but, you cannot argue with the visual and performance. lewis’ vision of the story is quite wonderful and i for one will be waiting for the next installments.

what’s remarkable was that when i returned to the movie, i found my inner adult had a great deal of patience. the kids in the film look exactly like they are supposed to be, and i found myself watching the story not as the kids but as their father and even as their granddad. i was entertained and i hope this story will become the next childrens’ classic. i would recommend it to my non-reading adult family and friends. when i was growing up i read my mother’s copy of the book but could not read the words in the lion, the witch, and the wardrobe. so to see it on the screen with other family members really did it for me. and, lewis’ text is a wonderful model for how to narrate a great story for adults.

it’s one of those rare movies whose value in both content and packaging is almost unparalleled. kids (and their parents) will love it and adults will also walk away feeling a bit smarter than they did before. no, the visuals, once the story is introduced, don’t completely blow you away. and, the acting is just kind of average. but, the story of young peter, susan, lucy, edmund, and susan does move. and, that’s the important thing.
still, i must fault disney’s marketing department a bit. the trailer was so slick that i kept expecting the story to follow the same redemptive path as the dvd the great mouse detective and this too was not to be. where was the giant and the lightening striking down a wicked tyrant? and, even some of the characters seemed a bit lacking. but, the film does create a sense that we know something about the stories and the characters before the movies begin. this knowledge is there to increase our anticipation of the story and that is something i think disney should have done. the chronicles of narnia was such a success in the 70’s because they were able to appeal to adults and children. the difference in this film is that the children just don’t come across as children but as brothers and sisters.
