Alexis Baxter plays the title character in The Seductress. Alexis Baxter (OBrien) is a literal femme fatal, marrying wealthy men and then killing them in order to assume their fortune. Kay Sanders (Gabriella Hall) has a rather large interest in the case. Kay’s boyfriend, Paul (Jonathan Smith), receives some inflammatory photographs and warns his neighbor Roman (Gary Angelino) that Roman may be in trouble. Roman takes action, and discovers that Alexis and Kay are actually sisters who are hiding a deep dark secret.

One of the deepest shocks I got from seeing The Seductress on film was in its invocation of the past. Like Waterhouses painting, the film had to make a transition from the nineteenth-century to the twentieth, and the way it made that transition, not surprisingly, is by way of the Middle Ages: the costumes, the sets, even the title are deliberately medieval. Hall, for example, wears a peasant dress, her face concealed, and one wonders what the name Alexis Baxter might tell us about the historical significance of the film, and about the role of its heroine. In the film, as in the novel, the speech of the Elizabethan period is echoed by that of the nineteenth-century. The subject, moreover, is the last female seduction of a man of rank and position, a theme largely absent from the eighteenth century. All this, of course, is very far from the austerity and the orderliness of the nineteenth-century, but the film also demonstrates the difficulty of harmonizing the nineteenth-century sense of order with the more disorderly reality of the twentieth. The emphasis on order, indeed, is one of the few things that the film, the novel, and the production know they cant do. They have their characters and their settings, and they try to order these in, so they look, something like the real world, but they cant get out of them what they actually are.

I left the exhibition with an impression that while the idea of a museum-wide chronological survey of suitor/potential-seducer art is fascinating, its also a dubious route to understanding the complexities of real women, who create their own sexual stories, and defy the labels we see them as bestowing upon themselves. Not a single painting in this show could be construed as pure seduction, or pure sexuality, not even Clara in a Ceiling, with its guilty knowledge of the woman who is about to deflower the young man. In fact, both Clara and The Crystal Ball can be read as depicting resistances to the seduction, even the guilt of the female partner. Neither female could be categorised as angel or seductress, and neither Clara nor The Crystal Ball are the seductresses of their respective male partners. This is not to knock the exhibition, which shows how a single woman, often defying convention, can seduce the male viewer and her audience with only a look or a smile. Its often true of us all, including me. We both love and distrust our bodies, and ourselves.
Because her films harken back to the occasional female-centered exploitation flick made before the release of Superwoman and the arrival of the Sweet and Low decade, Billers films are often confused with mainstream, glossier fare. But a close look at the movies reveals a highly-charged, more-powerful-than-usual woman as its hero. In The Love Witch, for example, the screenwriter and director explores one female trope in particular: that of the seductress. There are two such women in the film; one is in disguise, pretending to be a less-than-forthcoming young woman on a dating website in order to catch unsuspecting young men with her bee-stung lips and big blue eyes. Her lips, as you can see, are painted with the long-haired portrait called The Gaze in the show. Although the women express interest in the men below them, they are practically contemptuous toward a stranger who has not contacted them directly. Unaware of the subterfuge, they are caught by the mother of the boy who they speak to, but escape with their dirty scheme intact when the other girls mother attempts to end the exchange.
