WASHINGTON (AP) — Metro’s Orange and Yellow lines will remain closed after New York and Maryland closed their subways as the agency continued to run trains with half its normal staff and ridership.

The Metro board voted Saturday night to keep the fare gates closed in response to the snowstorm in the Northeast.

Metrorail service normally runs through the evening and early morning, when many riders use it to get to work. The Metro board makes the decision not to run trains on days when no trains are scheduled.

Still, the board would like the fare gates reopened soon. It asked for a $100,000 expense to start that process.

It is the second time the Metro board has been forced to close the fare gates since March 7, the day after the snow began in New York City. The gates were closed after Superstorm Sandy caused massive damage.

At Saturday’s meeting, board chair Paul Wiedefeld said Sandy “reminded us what it means to have the gates closed.”

Wiedefeld said the idea to keep the gates closed temporarily, in order to encourage train riders to get off and make better use of the system, seems to be working.

“On any given day, over 40 percent of the passengers are not using rail service,” he said. “To use the system effectively, we need everyone to show up.”
