during the past few weeks we have been fixing bugs and improving compatibility with the new firefox and the new linux kernel we use for the distro. one of the changes has been to switch the network client from libevent to openssl for synchronizing the downloads. this should improve compatibility with the network.

another change has been to improve the speed of downloads and the overall security by using a new ciphersuite in the https connection. this ciphersuite should make it harder for eavesdroppers to intercept your traffic.

okay – after reading at https://www.matasano.com/check/ it looks like i’m vulnerable to the dom-based password hash cracker , but i’m going to try to mitigate it, although it’s probably already too late. but i tried following the tor on android docs and it seems to suggest that i need to set things up so that firefox in the tor browser on my phone uses the --force-fields command line option. can anyone verify if this is necessary? and if so, how to do that? thanks.

update 3: i’ve noticed that the “restart and try again” button now doesn’t work properly. sometimes i get the error, but sometimes it proceeds to update. it’s possible that the problem is still the same, but in these cases it then installs incorrectly.

okay, i have isolated the issue to be in the tor browser profile. see my comment at https://lists.torproject.org/pipermail/tor-talk/2016-june/118725.html. i’m going to try the step that https://www.org/docs/android-setup.en suggests to do and let you know how it goes.

okay, i’m not totally sure what the bug is. it might be my change to the “torrc” file which was mentioned before, because it seems to have exactly the same effect. anyway, i’m down to a clean tor browser 6.0.1 profile. let me try to figure out how to do exactly what https://www.torproject.org/docs/android-setup.html.en says.

i updated the tor browser bundle 6.0.2 from the moment the new version became available. then i ran the ‘unpacked’ version of tails 2.4 and configured/created a new profile to use it. the installation of tails 2.4 failed 2 times in a row. the first time i had to close the settings window from a warning about firefox being out of date, and the second time i had to modify the windows command prompt and typed ‘ccmgr32.exe /accepteula'” and that was it. after that tails 2.4 installed successfully. i have not updated firefox manually after updating the bundle yet. updating firefox also failed. i then created a new tails 2.3 profile, but it didn’t work either. every single time, i got the message “couldn’t update firefox”. in all cases the tor browser bundle was completely updated with the new version. after that, though, i restarted the tails (almost) daily until now, but i didn’t update firefox manually yet. updating the firefox and tor browser bundle failed again. i also tried to install tails 2.4 (without doing anything else like creating a new profile, start the tails’ setup process or start the tails’ tbb browser). that failed, too. the steps i followed are as follows: 1) shut down the tails 2.4 tbb completely, 2) with firefox fully closed, removed tails 2.4 via tails > advanced > update to tails 2.4. 3) remove all tbb’s content (tor browser, etc.) via the tails’ setup via start > setup. 4) install tails 2.4 again via tails > advanced > update to tails 2. 5) confirm the install via tails > advanced > setup. 6) start up tails 2. 7) update the tor browser bundle via start > start update. 8) if you repeat all these steps, the installation will fail (3 or 4 of the 7-8 steps will fail). there is no solution to this problem yet. i am also afraid that it’s not going to work again with the new tor browser bundle that is coming in the next days. i have also reported this bug at bugzilla.gnome.org, but i am not sure if they really care about tbb as it’s relatively little used. the same problem (no updates possible via tor browser bundle) also occurs with the former tails 2.3 tbb, even if i re-create the profile. there is no way to update it manually. update via tbb fails every single time. firefox has also to be updated manually. the reason seems to be the same as with the tbb that was built on fx45 (see my post above).
