This “zip” includes a “–multi” switch, and a “–fast” switch.
In addition, this “zip” can now be compiled with the “–with-md5” switch.

Program Details
Compresses the contents of the files in one directory and places the combined file in another directory.
Options
-n (–noinput) Compresses the files with strings but does not decompress the original files.
-d (–delete) Deletes the original files after creating the combined file.
-f (–force) Force compression of the files even if the.bz2,.gz,.z, or.zip file already exists and is newer than the files that are being compressed.
-f Add an optional file name with contents to combine into. By default, the name of the temporary file created will be of the same name as the directory that the combined file will be placed in.
-i (–interactive) Prompt the user before running this command.
-p (–print) Show the progress of the operation.
-q (–quiet) Do not output the commands that are being run.
-v (–verbose) Increase the verbosity of messages.
Usage
Combine text files with strings [ -d ] [ -n ] [ -p ] [ -q ] [ -r | -s | -t ] [ -u ] [ ]

Zipmt does not impose any hard limit on the number of threads in use, unless you use the -m parameter (note m, not M, see below).
Zipmt is implemented by combining bzip2 and glib threads. A simple m-thread (multiple-threads) split of a file into n parts (k, 2^9) is as follows:
bzip2 -k 2^9 file.part[0..k-1].bz2
bzip2 -k 2^9 file.part[k..(k+1)*2-1].bz2
bzip2 -k 2^9 file.part[(k+1)*2..(k+1)*2+2^9-1].bz2
bzip2 -k 2^9 file.part[(k+1)*2+2^9..2*2^9].bz2

The resulting combined file has a total size of ((k+1)*2^9)+n+(2*n).(2^9+n+2).bz2. The difference in compression from this simple m-thread approach can be quite significant.
Zipmt has the ability to split a file in to multiple threads as well, and then to bind all threads together after they are all finished. In this more complicated case, the following steps are done to compress a file.
bzip2 -k 2^9 file.part[0..k-1].bz2
bzip2 -k 2^9 file.part[k..(k+1)*2-1].bz2

Zipmt was written with one thing in mind: speed. For the price of
gzip itself, you can get zipmt and get the benefit of parallel
compression at a high speed. This is especially useful for
compressing huge files on systems without a lot of CPU power.
zipmt’s parallelization is designed from the ground up to use as
many cores of the system as possible. This usually means using as
many CPU cores as the system has; however, if this is not the case,
zipmt will still effectively use the number of CPU cores a CPU has.
