**Figure 4-6:** Photoshop provides tools to manipulate images before you process them in the Develop module.
It is an extremely powerful editor but can also be a little daunting for those new to editing images or those who are moving from a traditional graphic design program. This guide will help you better use the powerful editing features of Elements.
The first thing to do is to learn Photoshop and edit images with it. This guide will walk you through the basic basics, and create a step-by-step introduction into Elements.
How to Use Photoshop Elements to Edit Photos
These are the basics you need to know to start editing photos with Photoshop Elements. There is a small learning curve to using Photoshop Elements so try to keep patience with yourself. If you skip this section, you’ll just be frustrated by the time you spend reinstalling your computer or quitting out of the program as you forget what you did the last time you used it.
Draw a Shape
To create any shape you’ll need to use the Pencil tool (X).
To draw a vertical line, hold down the Alt key and hold the left mouse button down and drag on the canvas to create the line.
To draw a horizontal line, hold down the Alt key, then hold the right mouse button down and drag on the canvas to create the line.
To create a circle, use the Pencil tool and hold down the Shift key as you create the circle with the mouse.
Change the Size of a Shape
To resize a shape, select the shape and then click and drag the mouse until you have the size you want.
To resize a rounded rectangle, hold down the Shift key and click and drag the mouse until you have the size you want.
To add a corner, hold down the Alt key and click and drag to create a square box.
Repeat this process as many times as you need to create the shape and size you want.
Add a Layer
To add a layer you use the Layer menu and select New.
To select the New Layer icon in the top right corner of the window, you use the arrow icon and select “New.”
Select the Save for Web and Devices icon and click Select File. Choose a File Name, select JPEG from the Format dropdown menu, and select OK.
Repeat this process as you need additional layers.
Add a Stroke
To add a stroke to a layer you first select the Stroke icon.

One of Sweden’s most famous musicians — and a country music star — has been charged with terrorism after allegedly posting several anti-Islamic images and messages online.
Prosecutors say the singer and songwriter, Marcus Nilsson, is accused of being a member of a terror cell and of participating in activities that could fuel violence or polarize public opinion.
Investigators are also probing claims that Nilsson was among a group that planned a mass shooting in Stockholm last year. According to the local media, Nilsson was being held in a closed police station after being placed under suspicion, and the investigation had not yet begun at the time of this writing.
In November, Nilsson posted several anti-Islamic images and messages on his Facebook account.
Nilsson, whose real name is Marcus Åkerblom, has released 11 albums as well as many songs and compilations. The latest one is “The Road That I Want to Travel” and it came out in December.
In a statement on Saturday, Nilsson said he believed his comments on social media were only making him “look like an idiot” but he also said he welcomed the charges.
“I am very calm. I just hope it will be shown to be right,” he said.
On his Facebook page, Nilsson has been posting anti-Islamic comments in recent months, for instance by quoting the American politician Donald Trump’s comment that Sweden has “become too cold” for Muslims.
As the news emerged, Nilsson’s fans reacted in various ways.
“What I want to do is be my own person and follow my path to live according to what I believe in,” Nilsson said in the statement. “I believe in equality. There’s no reason for me not to follow my path.
“I will use this as a lesson for the future.”
“This is very sad. Marcus Nilsson is also a well known musician in Sweden,” his Facebook page said. “We all have our choices in life and what you choose in life is your own affair.”
“People can do whatever they want, but what I don’t understand is when people get charged for it. Then it really is a problem,” one person wrote.

Esther Van Wart
Esther Van Wart (1860–1930) was a Dutch photographer. She was co-founder of the last women’s co-operative, De Arbeiderspers in The Hague, in 1912.
Life
Esther Van Wart was born in The Hague, the daughter of the painter Frans Dirk Van Wart (1831–1904) and his wife, the dressmaker Olga Den Hartog (1832–1912). After her father died, she and her mother ran a dressmaking business at their home at 22 Prinsengracht.
In 1912 she was one of the founders of the last women’s co-operative De Arbeiderspers. Her photographic studio was based at 9 Endstraat in The Hague, a house with a large garden and conservatory. Her buildings were razed in the 1930s in the redevelopment of the Hague.
Esther Van Wart made pictures of Dutch and Belgian artists like Alphons Marcon, Frans Hals and Jan Fock. Her sister, Liesbeth van Wart (born 1893), also practised photography.
The Van Wart family are counted among the very few in the Netherlands whose names can be traced back to the 16th century. The family history contains many interesting references to noble houses like the Ligne and Lamsdorp. In 1905, the matriarch was still riding horseback and often took part in the cavalry parade on the Dam Square, along with other equestrians.

Include the string of a message from a message sender
I’m writing a program that I’d like it to display to the user the string of the message that it was sent when it says “The message was sent to you.” in the main when sending a message.
