With regards to performance, the 5.2 update makes life a whole lot better. Considering that I downloaded the last version about a week ago, I find it a joyous experience now. For starters, I was just getting into a project where I was uploading many images, some that were taking a long time to process due to RAW format (the DNG files) and others that I was using only for creating JPEG previews and would never process further. I was just getting into a frustrated state, but a brief spurt of memory and processor use did the job and I was able to continue.

Out of curiosity, I went to Adobe and checked whether my OS was the 32- or the 64-bit version. I got the 64-bit, as expected. The first thing I did was go to the preferences, and checked the box to have Lighroom report memory usage (it didn’t), and with it came an instant increase in memory usage. Also, through the preferences, I confirmed that my original LR will be the one in use. I’m glad that I checked it, because I was about to remove the old version, in the vain hope of fixing some of the performance issues I was experiencing.

Yes, LR 5.2 works speedily on computers with 64-bit architecture. I mentioned that an earlier version might be incompatible with 64-bit tools, but as it is now, I have no problem with that. I have updated to Lightroom 5.2, just to test compatibility, and I am quite sure that it will work well on your computer as well thanks to its relative speed.

I downloaded the latest DL version on my Win7 64-bit PC, tried some of the new functions with no significant bugs, so I can confirm that it was a pretty simple change to update! When I opened LR, I confirmed that the old installation was the default version in use, so, if you’re already running LR5, there’s no need to delete it or switch to the RC version yet.
