Newsgroups are a simple and used (since 1994) way to search for and download news articles on Usenet. Since today it’s not possible to publish new articles on Usenet there is no real content provider and therefore usually the search results depend heavily on the search keywords. Only the biggest newsgroups support multiple threads per article. NNTP makes it possible to download many articles at the same time. NNTP clients are in general very slow and power hungry. Therefore only a small lightweight client is needed to make it usable for most people. NNTP clients can be used to search for news articles on Usenet, to download articles and to un-index (somehow more lightweight) the articles. The download speed can be improved with the use of multiple threads. A download speed of 1 Mb per second is the maximum possible. If more than one file is returned a progress indicator appears. A multi-threaded download is a good idea if you’re using a slow Internet connection or only a slow desktop computer.
NNTP is an old standard that is still widely in use. Therefore the server selection is limited to what’s currently on the internet.
