The Sniper VST plugin contains 64 narrow notch filters controlled by midi. By default no filters are active. When a note-on is received a group of notch filters corresponding to the harmonic content of the note is started.
In special circumstances this plug allows you to remove or attenuate specific instruments from a mix while leaving the other virtually untouched.
HOW TO USE:
Place as insert as close to the material as possible (for example, I would place an EQ, compressor or “enhancer” after the sniper). Make sure you play on the correct octve, try using the “Tune” mode when editing the notes for the sniper.
Only some sounds will be able to attenuate / remove without destroying the rest of the material. If the sound is a clean waveform (sin,sqare,tri,saw) with no vibrato you have a very good chance of removing it.
You will not likely be able to remove vocals without cutting some ugly holes in the rest of the material. The sniper is polyphon, so you can keep a note on to remove the tail of a note in the material. There is a hardcoded limit of 64 filters in total, but fear not, if you run out of filter the most silent (or highest frequency) will be removed.

Based on the concept of the “Fool’s” filter where some pre-recorded wind instruments from the 60’s and 70’s are used as a reference to filter out extra or wrong frequencies.
I used only the most common waveforms used on the market. This VST provides a wide variety of options and adjustable controls. I included the most common filters and midi controls.
The filters in the sniper are available from a range of 44 hz to 280 hz. They are based on the 12 notes of a minor scale. Each single filter is designed to filter a range of 12 notes from the minor scale. The filters are named from A to G.
Note: The filters are based on the sound created by the most common guitar, bass and piano (and organs). Other timbres may cause the filter to not work perfectly.

The filters have been designed to sound as close to the real instruments as possible.
They are designed to sound more extreme than actual instruments.
Example: The lows are well filtered, the highs are cut.
Note that the filter is not a low pass filter, but a notch filter.
This means that the filter is only designed to remove narrow bandwidth signals
(most narrow notch filters such as the VMO will remove all low pass components)
Also, in general it is recommended that you remove vibrato and tremolo effects,
and processes that are designed to emulate these effects.

The instrument’s name means “lightning”, and this is a very good description of the effect. It is a polyphonic sound source that will leave the instrument you want to remove in tact while removing/attenuating the sound from another instrument or sound.
Sniper Notes:
If you play on any other note than you wanted, the snipper will not make any changes to the material. This is something I’ve tried to address by including a “Tune” setting under each menu button. When in “Tune” mode the note you play can have any pitch and will only impact the filter set to that frequency. In “Solo” mode you can play the octave, or sharp or flat, which can have an impact on the filters, however I wouldn’t suggest playing random notes in tune. The notch filters are large to remove any problematic frequencies, however using the sniper while soloing can be a useful tool.
