RPG Masquerades as a Dating Simulation
With the exception of a few select games, most RPGs in Japan have carried a dating simulation motif for a long time. This type of dating sim is common in the Western world as well, but we don’t often think of it as being part of the RPG genre.
Because of this, it can be confusing when you see dating sim titles such as Crisis Core and Fate/Stay Night. While both games have a greater focus on the story than the dating simulation, it’s easy to spot the difference between the two.
Even though dating sims have their own niche (most of them are niche, after all), it’s fun to think about how the same basic game mechanic could be applied to an RPG. The result would be a dating simulation that took its cues from various RPG elements while simultaneously imparting a unique twist.
In this article, I’ll be discussing one such dating simulation inspired RPG, but I’ll also be touching on other games that have used dating sim mechanics to this effect.
Nanairo no Puzzle – MMO RPG
Tatsuya Takaya’s visual novel Nanairo no Puzzle was first released for the PlayStation 2 in 2004. While the visual novel was released in Japan, it didn’t come to English-speaking audiences until 2006, when it was released in English for the PS2. Nanairo no Puzzle also received an English localization for the PlayStation Portable in 2007.
One could look at Nanairo no Puzzle as a visual novel with computer-game elements fused together into one story. The player controls a magical girl (a girl who wields magic) and solves various scenarios that she encounters while helping people who are in need.
However, Nanairo no Puzzle is more of a romance-style RPG than a conventional visual novel. Each “chapter” in the game is split up into two parts. The effect of miR-182-5p on rat renal tubular epithelial cell apoptosis was determined by MTT assay, Hoechst 33258 staining, and flow cytometry. The protein expression of p53, p21, p27, caspase-3, Bcl-2, and Bax was detected by Western blotting. The protein expression of phosphorylated adenosine 5′-monophosphate-activated protein kinase (p-AMPK) and AMPK in rat renal tubular epithelial cells was detected by Western blotting. Western blotting was used to detect the protein expression of p53, p21, p27, caspase-3, Bcl-2, and Bax in rat renal tubular epithelial cells.
