The film is billed as a gangster musical and what it has is few big musical numbers that add a refreshing touch to the film. Its not totally a musical, but the songs between scenes at times are so inspiring that you have to acknowledge its existence. The songs are very rhythmically sensitive and the songs inflate your heart to massive size when you are tired of viewing Tamil cinema. The music for the film has been composed by duo Santhosh Narayanan and A.R.Rahman, who have also composed the music for most of Prabhuss films. The sound for the film is perfect and like all Rahmans productions you can hear the union in the microphone. The lyrics have a perfect balance of sincerity and punchline. On average an individual song (or song sequence) is over four minutes long. The first song sequence that appears is on the phone conversation that occurs when Karthik meets a gang member to reclaim his bike. The man explains to Karthik that this man is collecting money for his brother who has been sentenced to10 years in prison. Karthik then pays a quick call to his producers but hes waiting for a call that wont come. Drowned in the sea of guilt he takes a long walk, which soon leads him into a house where he meets a little girl. The girl is certain that he is Karthik and that his bike is under the table. He asks her for her name, the girl hesitates, then tells him his name, before the girl picks up a cellphone and begins to dial a number. Karthik watches him as the ring tone goes off and hes unable to control his heart. Karthik is unsure if its his phone he is calling someone or himself but in the end he takes the call and hes relieved when he finds his phone is ringing. Its with this song that we realise we have been hanging around with Karthik too long. The song sequence is set off by a stinging guitar chord introduction, which builds a longing for the guy who havent been back to his house in a long time. The lingering maijaan-ing rhythm in the song is infectious and the tune sounds like its coming from a lonely hearts corner. The maijaan in the song can be heard at all times, but theres some cute moments like when the phone suddenly goes off and the ringing ceases when the call is picked up. A typical morning interaction for the guy at the end of the day would be as follows, Its dinnertime and Im at home. I would go through the mail, check my bank account and do other daily chores. After which I might go back to sleep or I would prepare dinner. I would eat dinner and sleep like this for a while. Then after that I would do my homework. A typical day for a teenager in our day-to-day lives. What about you? Okay we can do a bit of both. The song sequence is followed by another on the phone. This one cant be missed. It features an incredibly mesmerising tune that breaks into a super playful rhythm. This tune is a perfect musical representation of the character of Karthik. There are moments in this character hes the laughing stock of his family, moments when hes such a jolly fellow but there are moments also when he cant be bothered to do the simplest of chores. The song is followed by a very important call and followed by one more on the phone, which is the eyntha (which translates as nothing but hey, listen to this). The song is too infectious to not feature in the movie, particularly when you become so used to it that you realise you dont have to say anything when theres a song in a movie.

the movie is set in a slum that he had to shoot in, dhanush says. if you live in chennai, it is like the slums here. there are numerous slums in chennai and we shot the slum on the streets of anna nagar and t nagar with two local children playing the lead roles. they played with us for around two to three months and that was a very good experience. we have girls from a school that does not have any marks. we made this movie on location and shot it within four months. it was fun shooting the street scenes of chennai in this film. it is hard to say that polladhavan is not a hardcore movie, as it is in the story and the characters that it is set in. but i think it is very much based on someone’s life and life of chennai that exists in everyone’s mind.
i first heard about this film while travelling. an old friend told me about it, and how it told the story of a man who buys a pulsar bike to go to work but loses it after an accident. i had got an interesting film and immediately agreed to do it. it gave me an opportunity to live in a slum, which is something i am not used to.
one of the most memorable characters in the film is hema (divya spandana), who is first seen sitting on a motorbike with her boyfriend and her young daughter. as the story progresses, however, hema’s girlhood, and youthful attitudes and behaviour are gradually replaced by a more mature attitude and lifestyle. she takes on a more adult role in the relationship, keeping the romance on the back burner and focusing more on the work she does for her mother’s garment factory.
manikandan first became interested in cinema when he was in school. kaaka muttai was first screened in an auditorium in kodambakkam with a tamil film club he joined while a student at bharathiar university.
