This chapter starts with basic features you need to learn if you’re considering using Photoshop, and then introduces some more advanced features.

Getting to know the basics

Knowing Photoshop’s tools, features, and functions are important to beginning and beginning-level users of the program. Some of the tutorials, books, and tutorials available on the market may get a little complicated, but the basics are not hard. In this section, we present a simple introduction to some basic features of Photoshop you need to know to succeed.

Understanding layers

A layer in Photoshop is a set of commands that defines and provides a uniform means for manipulating images. Each layer can contain several properties, including filters, effects, and the color, opacity, and blending modes you applied to the layer.

For example, consider a background layer that has an effect applied to it, with a drop shadow or beveled edge. The entire background layer is then applied to the image, and the user can then see the effect on the entire background layer through the transparency of the layer.

If, on the other hand, you used a different transparent color for the layer, the layer would simply apply a stroke or a beveled edge to the layer but not to the original image. A layer is thus a logical way to apply a set of rules to the entire image (or specific parts of the image).

Follow these steps to work on a document with layers:

1. Create a new document in Photoshop.

2. Create a new layer.

3. Apply a foreground color that is visible or transparent.

For example, use a red layer with a transparency of 40 percent.

4. Create a selection box.

5. Set the foreground color to white.

6. Fill the selection box.

7. Open the Layer dialog box.

8. Click the Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer button.

9. Click OK in the Layer dialog box to create a new layer.

10. Rename the layer.

11. Apply any filters and effects you desire to the layer, including color (with an alpha value of 1).

12. Change the blending mode to Screen (refer to Figure 6-1).

13. Apply any filters and effects to the layer.

14. Change the blending mode to Overlay or Soft Light, as shown in Figure 6-2.

15. Click OK

Select the correct brightness and contrast:

Adjust the brightness and contrast of your images to improve the exposure. Here are the settings to edit using Photoshop Elements:

Select Brightness and Contrast (2)

Use the Highlights & Shadows Control (3) to correct unsharp masking.

Use the Curves (4) to make a correction.

Click the middle slider to open the Curves dialog. Click the leftmost slider to adjust the curve.

Press the right slider to add or remove red, green and blue channels. Move the left slider to make the curve curve up, and the right slider to curve the curve down.

When you are satisfied with the curve, press OK.

Adjust the Hue and Saturation:

Adjust the hue and saturation of your images to improve color. Here are the settings to edit using Photoshop Elements:

Select image (1)

Select Hue and Saturation (2)

Use the Highlights & Shadows Control (3) to correct unsharp masking.

Use the Curves (4) to make a correction.

Click the middle slider to open the Curves dialog. Click the left slider to adjust the hue.

Move the right slider to add or remove red, green and blue channels.

Most breast biopsies are wrong

The vast majority of mammograms and diagnostic tests don’t detect breast cancer.

(HealthDay)—The vast majority of mammograms and diagnostic tests don’t detect breast cancer, according to a study published in the June issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study found that only 14 percent of mammograms are truly “positive,” meaning that they detected cancer. About a third of mammograms that are “positive” turn out to be “false positives”—mammograms that show a lump, but no cancer.

The authors explain that the rate of “false negatives”—mammograms that do not show a lump but should—is even worse. The study estimates that only 25 percent of mammograms are true negatives and are only picked up by follow-up biopsy, which is invasive, expensive, and uncomfortable for many women.

“These findings dramatically underscore the need for more accurate cancer detection and underscore the primary importance of careful attention to risk assessment and prevention in both women and men,” said corresponding author Dr. Norrina Russell, director of the National Cancer Institute’s Office of Cancer Survivorship.

“Women with a personal or family history of breast cancer are at especially high risk and should be checked more closely,” added author Dr. Donna Hayes, director of the Division of Cancer Prevention at the US National Institutes of Health.

The researchers reviewed data from women who participated in various National Cancer Institute and National Institutes of Health breast cancer screening trials. The researchers looked at mammograms and follow-up diagnostic tests taken between 1984 and 1996. The women were randomly assigned to one of five screening groups, including mammography only, mammography plus clinical breast examination and diagnosis, clinical breast examination and diagnosis plus mammography, a combination of both mammography and ultrasound, and mammography, ultrasound, and clinical breast examination.

The researchers found that the rate of “false negatives” is almost double in women younger than 50 and in those with a family history of breast cancer.

The study is based on data from 30,000 women from the United States. Overall, 6.5 percent of the women were found to have cancer and the researchers found that 96.1 percent of mammograms were considered “positive.” They noted, however, that this may include an estimate of the total number of cancers missed by the screening program, not just cancers missed by mammography.
