The communist resistance began to infiltrate what used to be the Vichy zone in France, and on 4th August 1944, she was sent to Le Mans to the mountain outpost of Maisons. On the way, she suffered a fierce attack from the Germans, who almost killed her, and almost got her arrested. But nevertheless she got to Maisons and joined the FFI in January 1945. Within four months she was a courier between the regions and her sister, who had become a partisan leader. During these clandestine contacts, she heard appalling stories of the bombardment and sacking of villages. She signed up for the Free French Air Force in August 1945, and became a pilot, as she claimed to be blind. She finished her service in April 1946, and joined her brother. In 1946, she married an Italian airman. But her brother informed on her, and she was arrested in 1948.

The French version of Outlaw is the story of the work of a French officer of the Communist Resistance, Vadal, who tries to help a German officer escape from the war. A courageous, idealistic action that threatens to cause them both great personal loss, but ultimately results in recovery for them both.

The story had a posthumous sequel. The author’s aunt married the man she had mistaken for her husband.Still married to the other, he came over to France, but only to explore the situation, and left in due course with his wife and children. Attempts to discover what happened to them still leave the author feeling sick and sad.Shifting position to give me some relief, I’m now thinking about tea in France and its modifications to time honoured recipes, and the odd Italian / French Corsican mixed heritage. The two people I got most attached to in the course of the last three weeks have been of that ilk.

There she formed a relationship with her father’s former friend, Muhammad, an Italian brother in the mystical teaching. They married in March 1923. Her father, despite being the better half, was not in favour of marriage, but he had his reasons and that was a major source of a permanent rift that lasted until his death. From the day of their marriage, they lived in Paris, where they remained until the birth of her second child in 1927.Her father never got over the fact that she took her mother’s name. It was he who objected that she wear European clothes. He always stressed that when she was French she would be a Frenchwoman.
Noor was a perfectionist, but she was also an iconoclast. She had a feel for music, and she saw in the growth of the voodoo movement in Paris the secular message that mattered to her. She also developed a rather surprising interest in astrology, and even attempted to lecture on it in French.
