The first time I told my students to expect to use a calculator to solve this problem, they were shocked. Most had not really thought about it. They just blindly thought that calculus was the math of choice on the test. They had never really thought about how the calculator could lead them astray, and so they were not expecting to need it. They went back and tried the problem several times, but every time, they failed. Many eventually gave up and used a calculator. Some didn’t. One of those students ended up with a perfect 800 score. In fact, I was impressed that she never used a calculator.

So, what if you get stuck halfway through? No problem. Just take another bite out of the problem and bite off even more. And another, if necessary. Remember, you can do the math steps without the calculator if you want to. Use your best judgment, but if you stay mindful of this, you should be able to convert at least 50% of the question into arithmetic. More is possible. If you feel youve solved it, just press your pencil down hard on the paper. This will not only give you a satisfying sense of accomplishment but also help to harden the graphite in your pencil, saving you the need to sharpen it later.

In some instances, the math concept is clearly a weakness on the test, and its worth dedicating a reasonable amount of studying to. In other cases, the weak concepts are not directly testable on the SAT. For example, many algebra problems and word problems are phrased in terms of given scenarios that would never be given on the SAT. But if you were to flip the scenarios, or more commonly, to put a slightly different problem, you could sometimes get an 800.

You can also think of this advantage as a set of magic numbers. For example, if you reach a score of 9.7, you have less than 1% of the normal doubt that you would have without the outlier math strategy. Or, if you reach a score of 9.75, you will surely have less than 1% of the doubt you would have without the math strategy.
So start out in math session #1, and pay special attention to the questions at the top and bottom of the Test. There are too many questions at the top and bottom to study at length, so, study them as thoroughly as you can. Then in math session #2, you can focus on numbers at the top and bottom of the Test, and the centers.
Advanced Math is the ultimate SAT Math target in terms of difficulty: too hard for most students, but you need to know it if you want to score in the top 5% of your class or higher. Some students can handle this category of SAT Math, but if youre not sure, the Tips for Difficult SAT Math Problems section earlier in this course should be a good way to gain confidence. Another option is to try one of the SAT prep materials that address this SAT Math topic like the Khan Academy website.
