Common Layers
Various layers can be set to contain different areas of the photo, such as sky, highlights, or people. You can group layers into panels to work with them more easily. Photoshop’s layers are much more powerful than the layers in a raster graphics editor, because you can draw on the layers, create clip art, and make complex selections. The layers also display the selectors described later in the article.
Styles
Photoshop has a variety of tools that allow you to change the style of a layer or a photo. These tools can be applied using keyboard shortcuts or menus. Each tool has its own special functions, such as painting edges or correcting spots.
Gradients
Photoshop has a wide variety of gradient tools. You can control the color ramp and the shape of the gradient by setting variables. Gradient tools are useful for applying photo-editing effects and for creating your own designs. The gradient tools are activated by using the keyboard shortcut Alt+B or Alt+R.
The Gradient Tool allows you to use a variety of color blends in your images.
You can manipulate the details in a gradient shape using the Direct Selection tool.
There are many settings to control a gradient.
You can use the Gradient Tool to apply a gradient to the Levels tool. You can then add details to the gradient by changing the settings. The Gradient Tool has a number of settings that you can access using the keyboard shortcut Alt+O.
Convert to Grayscale
Photoshop has a Tools menu command called “Convert to Grayscale.” Although this command changes the overall color of the photo, it keeps the tonal range and highlights. It also includes some special settings for converting a photo.
This command allows you to select a tonal range from the entire range of colors to a specific range.
You can control how much of a color-range shift takes place by adjusting the settings in the dialog box.
Automatically Optimize Photo
There are a number of settings in the Optimize command that enable you to automatically optimize a photo. You can use this command to tweak photos of all types. The settings allow you to change the face of the photo, apply special effects, and even help create a new photo from scratch.

The Supreme Court has granted cert. to allow an Internet service provider’s challenge to a lower court ruling that upheld a 2006 law requiring Internet service providers to retain copies of communications passing through their facilities.
In a brief order, the court granted the writ of certiorari, directing the parties to brief the question whether the ruling below — that the law does not intrude on First Amendment rights because it only requires the retention of metadata — passes muster under the First Amendment.
The case is Pena-Rodriguez v. AT&T, No. 11-810, cert. granted Dec. 19.
Metadata is communications about communications. For example, the order to search a database of stored communications would show that this particular e-mail had been sent to this particular person.
That information could, in theory, be used to identify the person or group who sent the e-mail, or identify the e-mail’s intended recipients. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, which is representing Verizon, has said metadata can be used to do this.
The law requires telephone and cable companies that use electronic communications services to retain for at least 18 months the date and time metadata associated with phone calls and e-mails that pass through their facilities, but does not require that the content of the communication be retained.
Verizon maintains that such information is a critical tool for investigating illegal activity and protecting national security, and that retention alone is sufficient to comply with the law.
The Federal Communications Commission, which regulates broadband Internet, adopted the requirement in 2006 and upheld it in 2009, and a federal judge in Seattle agreed.I’ve had a great time using my special occasion wardrobe for the past three years.
