## Grouping and Organizing Elements with Layers
The basic units of an image — elements — are organized within a document into separate layers. Any Photoshop file contains at least one layer. In general, more layers allows you to organize your images more effectively.
Figure 5-6 shows a page I created in Photoshop that was set to paint using layer masks. Each of the different elements is located on a separate layer, and their locations and colors are assigned by the order in which the layers were created. This means you can easily paint a certain section without disturbing areas that were painted before.

## Getting Sketchy with Layers
Layers enable an image to be manipulated without affecting the other layers. By allowing individual elements to remain on top of each other, and then painting, retouching, or coloring over certain layers, the final image is created. Figure 5-7 shows three separate layers over which I painted using a combination of layer masks and selections.

The three layers were:
* A JPEG image of a steel mill
* A PNG layer of a depiction of the bridge that carries a railroad over the mill
* A PNG layer of a cement plant
The layer of the mill was superimposed over the railroad bridge and allowed me to paint over the railroad. After painting over the bridge, I could paint over the mill without interfering with the other layers.
## Copying, Moving, and Filling Layers
As I mentioned previously, it’s easy to copy a layer. Drag it out from its original location and place it in another location in a document. Figure 5-8 shows how I copied a layer that I had just created.

After I placed it on a new location, I changed the blending mode of the layer to color. I can even change the layer’s color — a useful trick for retouching images.

The programs are almost identical, with only subtle differences in interface and behavior. The Photoshop Elements editing modes appear similar to the Photoshop and the Image Ready modes are similar to the ImageReady modes. The new Sketcher menu, which replaces the Create Sketches menu, is also a new addition to Photoshop Elements and is used to create vector-based icons, buttons, and other shapes. (See Using Sketches and Draw for more on this subject.)
In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to edit your photos in Photoshop Elements and create a variety of effects.
1. Import Photos
Photoshop Elements is similar to Photoshop in that you can import images from folders on your computer and the program will automatically recognize the file types so you don’t need to select each one individually. You can also open images on your computer by browsing through the main menu, selecting Open from the File menu, or opening a file from the Windows Open dialog.
2. Navigate Around Your File
Photoshop Elements can be used to navigate images like any other image editor, but the menus are organized in a way that makes it easier. To move around your image, click once on the title of your image, or drag to change where the page is displayed.
In the title bar, you can see the name and location of your image. In the title bar, you can also see a thumbnail of your image. In the upper-left corner, you’ll see a button with the opening and closing handles. You can move and zoom into your image by clicking on the handle, making a marquee-style selection of all the photo or part of the photo, and then dragging the handles to a different part of the image.
3. Navigate Up and Down in the Menu System
When you have multiple images open or when you open a new image, Photoshop Elements does a great job of displaying only the files you need. If you want to see more, just hover over the Menu Bar at the top. The menu will give you direct access to any file in your library, and even if you don’t have a file open, you can still use this menu.
4. Select the File Menu
In the top left corner of your Photoshop Elements window, you’ll see a white box with a gray handle. Click and drag this handle up or down to change the menu icons that appear on your desktop. When you have the File menu displayed, you can add buttons

Among the assays of electrolytes that can be performed with lesser cost and greater accuracy, we include the plasma levels of Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+ and Cl- ion which have proven useful in the evaluation of volume expansion, the altered diuresis, and the etiopathogenesis of hypokalemia. The normal total exchangeable and ionized Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and K+ in plasma are three to six times greater than in the blood cells. The normal blood electrolyte values in peripheral blood in cardiac patients are: Na+ 136-145 mEq/l, K+ 4.9-5.5 mEq/l, Cl- 108-118 mEq/l, HCO3- 22-25 mEq/l, Ca++ 9-10 mg/dl and Hct 30-35%. In acute heart failure, the ionized Ca++ value is reduced, while plasma ionized Cl- and HCO3 values are higher, the total exchangeable Ca++ is higher in acute left ventricular failure than in normal controls. In chronic congestive failure due to dilated cardiomyopathy, these values are almost normal with the exception of the ionized Ca++ value which is lower than in normal controls and similar to acute heart failure. In patients with chronic left ventricular failure the plasma HCO3- is higher than normal with a normal total exchangeable Ca++. Clone Stamp- An effective tool used to repair images, Clone Stamp allows you to copy pixels from one area of the image and past them into another area. This is useful for repairing damaged or corrupt images.
The Blur Tool allows you to blur an image.
The Smudge Tool allows you to rub the image, to have a distorted effect.
The Eraser Tool is a useful tool to erase black areas in your images.
The Gradient Tool allows you to create stunning seamless patterns. To create such gradients, first select the area you want to edit and then go to the panel menu and select the Gradient Tool. Now, choose between a Linear or Radial gradient. This is a common method to create gradients.
The Match Color Tool allows you to change the color of a selected area. You can also change the color inside a selected area.
The Sharpen tool sharpens the image. The Filter Menu will show you different options to sharpen.
The Pen Tool is a bit like a pen, in that you can use it to paint to make your image look more artistic.
The Patch tool allows you to repair a part of the image.
The Gradient Fill can be used to fill an area with a color gradient.
The Spatter Tool allows you to fill a selected area with a thick streak of color.
The Spot Healing Brush allows you to repair small areas of a damaged image. You can choose the size of the area and the color.
The Gradient overlay tool allows you to apply a gradient mask over an image. This is useful for adding a nice background to your images.
The Gradient Map tool allows you to create a gradient that varies over the image.

The Emboss tool makes an area look like it is “glowing”. It is very useful for making an image feel lighter.
