* **Elements:** If you don’t want to spend the time learning Photoshop, Elements is a tried-and-true free version. The interface may seem intimidating at first, but there is an excellent series of tutorials on the web. As with Photoshop, this program contains a slew of features, many of which are more suited for certain users. You’ll need to experiment to find the ones that are most useful to you. I discuss Photoshop and Elements in greater detail in Chapter 3.
* **Photoshop Elements:** Photoshop’s nearest competitor, Elements offers many of Photoshop’s tools. You’ll find that it also does not have all of Photoshop’s bells and whistles, but that said, it’s still more robust than the many other products that introduce you to editing images.
* **Paint Shop Pro:** The newest program to the editing field is Paint Shop Pro. This application is most often found in Apple’s iLife suite. Like Photoshop, it is a raster-based application, and it has a relatively simple interface. However, it still offers extensive editing capabilities.
* **Adobe Fireworks:** This application also resides in Apple’s iLife suite. It is primarily a vector-based or bitmapped editor, but it is a powerful one that offers nonlinear features. Fireworks is often used in web design as well as for some graphic design because of its compatibility with popular web standards.
Knowing Photoshop’s history makes it easier to understand and work with its many features and settings. From its inception it was developed to be an incredible tool to manipulate images. It gained a reputation for being so powerful that it scared away potential new users. Finally, Adobe realized that many people didn’t want to learn such a complex program. The focus was shifted to making the program easier to use.
This article is about how to use the Photoshop Elements interface to your full advantage. For more technical information and tutorials about how to make edits, go to the “Advanced Photoshop Elements Editing Techniques” page on photoshop.com.
Why Photoshop Elements?
There are many applications available for image editing. All of these applications generally look and work the same way. The software is usually a single window application with a file browser, a folder listing, and tools.
Most of the features in these applications allow you to perform basic editing of images. These features include the basic tools like the eraser, the lasso, and the paint bucket. Some of the applications also have a drawing tool called the path tool. This tool makes it easy to create or edit vector lines and curves.
Image Editing with Adobe Photoshop Elements
The same basic features are present in Photoshop Elements. Here are a few tips for using the interface to your advantage:
The “Easy” Mode
The main interface in Photoshop Elements is similar to what you are familiar with in the Windows version of the program. It has a file browser, a folder listing, and an area for open files.
The file browser lists all the files on the computer that the current user has the ability to open. The images are displayed by using an icon view.
The folder listing is also similar to the Windows version. You can view folders, change the display of the windows (hiding certain files), and drag and drop images.
The “Design” Mode
There is a menu on the top left of the interface. This menu contains some of the tools that most photographers, graphic designers, web designers, and meme creators use.
The Design menu contains the following tools:

The Edit Menu
The Edit Menu Items
There are many different tools in the Edit Menu. For most photographers, this is the menu of choice.
The Image menu is where you will find the most commonly used tools. The Image menu includes the following tools:
The Selection Tools menu
The Brush menu
The Zoom tools
The Crop Menu
The Crop tools are found in the Crop menu.
The Design menu is where you will find the tools that graphic designers use the most.
The Design menu includes the following tools:

Torchlight: Battle for Everdark Screen Shots
Hi, my name is Mike Na, a senior game artist at Runic Games. I’ve worked on Torchlight for quite a while on the game team. I’m very happy to be able to show the new screenshot done recently, showing the various classes at work, with their different abilities and mechanics. I also want to reveal a couple of other classes that haven’t been introduced yet, and some new spells.
The pictures were done as a semi-realistic new user experience, giving the player a clear understanding of how the classes all fit into the game.
We have the classic casters (mage and warrior), melee characters (brawler and ranger), tanky class (barbarian), and more. The new skills are obviously represented in some detail.

Fire will continue to burn in southwestern Colorado through the weekend, as hot temperatures caused a wildfire near Arapahoe that has so far burned up more than 4,000 acres, and threatening nearly 30 homes.
A Windy Hill fire, east of Boulder, has burned more than 4,000 acres, and as of Thursday afternoon had been held within the boundary of the Cimarron Fire.
The fire was ignited Monday afternoon, on a day of hot temperatures and dry conditions.
The fire was reported as being three quarters of a mile wide, but has only grown to about 5,200 acres as of Thursday afternoon.
It has not yet been contained.
A private residence, home to a retirement community, and several homes in the rural area have been evacuated.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office has been assisting in the evacuation of the area since Tuesday, which included setting up of stations to evaluate evacuation alerts from residents.
As of Thursday morning, there were 17 active fire stations and 100 personnel deployed, along with two helicopters and a fixed wing aircraft.
More than 1,000 fire personnel were active in the area.
A number of Coloradans have taken to social media, sharing photos of the fire in the area of Boulder, and evacuating residents from their homes.

AMSTERDAM—Reuters reported that Mike Selgelid had not only come home empty-handed in the Sony A55 leak case, but that he also faces “at least” 17 years’ imprisonment.
U.S. Marshal James Casperson tells Ars that a New York federal court judge had, by his count, issued 17 search warrants in the case, only one of which was for Sony’s Manhattan office. “They found three things they were looking for,” he said, declining to detail what those things were.
More important, Selgelid had been a heavy victim of Sony’s recent hacking. The Justice Department got him to sign a document in which he acknowledged that he had used a friend’s computer to download “internal e-mails and other documents” from Sony. He also did not dispute that he had intended to give the documents to the media.
For several months last year, Selgelid, who works at the web publication PCWorld, had published a report—based on hacked e-mails Sony had revealed to the press—alleging that the company did not handle the response to the PS3 network problem as well as it could have. The report, which called Sony’s response “inept” and “lacking in urgency and empathy,” also called Sony’s attitude toward its biggest problem “as unprofessionally as humanly possible.”
In April, after the release of more information—including the fact that the PS3 network has problems that are numerous, far-ranging, and persistent—Sony-watchers were puzzled when Selgelid cut his losses and stopped writing about the PS3.
“What is he supposed to do after seeing all this documentation of how Sony has mishandled the launch of the PS3?” said a U.S. government source. “Write about how we need to change the CEO every six months? He’s done his job.”
The source also pointed out that Selgelid had stayed in the Sony system for months. “His house is password-protected, and he can’t get on the network because of that. He has no way to download anything. It’s extremely ironic.”
