Time for a cropping and resizing
Before creating the next image, it’s best to take a look at your composition and decide whether you need to crop or resize it.
Crop an image to keep only the important part of the subject and to ensure that the subject fits in the frame. Select the Crop tool (the red rectangle), as shown in Figure 2-3.

In Figure 2-3, the window shows the crop selection, which is positioned by the crosshairs. The crop selection fills the area in the green box.
You can’t resize an image to fit a specific size. However, you can either stretch or compress an image to fit the desired proportions. You may have had the experience of trying to fit an image of a full-length person onto a thumbnail and in the end, you may have spent a great deal of time trying to figure out why the image is distorted. After all, your intentions were good.
It’s best to manually crop rather than distort the composition. Using the Crop tool to resize is much more difficult because you are changing the proportions of the image at the same time you are increasing or decreasing the size of the image. You can experiment and see what each of those two approaches have done to the image, but you should understand that cropping is the most effective way to resize an image.

To install Adobe Photoshop Elements, you must have a copy of Adobe Creative Cloud already installed. The software is available for $69.99 for a single user or $99.99 for a multi-user subscription.

1. First things first
Downloading Adobe Photoshop Elements
Adobe Photoshop Elements is available for all platforms.
To install, download the installer and run it. You can download the full versions of Photoshop Elements or the Adobe Photoshop Elements software. The latter has fewer features and a simpler user interface.
If you’re using a Mac, you can use the software to convert photos between RAW and JPG, export the images as JPG and edit them in-place.
You can also convert RAW to TIFF, GIF or PNG formats.
If you’re using a Windows PC, the software has a simple user interface, but it has a wide range of features you can use.
Installing Elements
Before you start using Photoshop Elements, make sure that it is correctly installed and that you have already installed the Adobe Creative Cloud suite, which contains other Adobe products.
You can download and install the software from Adobe’s official website.
It is a lot easier to find reliable and comprehensive guides if you’re installing it for the first time.
Locating the software
Once you have downloaded and installed Photoshop Elements, it’s time to find the software. Your computer needs to have a hard drive large enough to store the software.
Depending on the size of the file, you might need a 8GB to 20GB hard drive. It will be easier to find your software if the space on your hard drive is clear.
The software is installed in your Program files folder.
A shortcut to the software is located on your desktop and in My Computer.

Volatile Characteristics and Surface Tension of Single-Species Microemulsions.
We report the characterization of phase-transition microemulsions composed of only one component liquid that can form either cubic or hexagonal phase. The thermodynamic analysis in these systems is very challenging, especially the investigation of pressure/density fluctuations and the evaluation of surface tension that are indicators of phase behavior. We introduce an analytical expression based on the integral form of the Clausius-Clapeyron equation to calculate the pressure fluctuations and the direct methods to determine surface tension. The analysis of the microscopic composition of the studied microemulsions is based on a recently developed probe using a single laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) method. The temperature fluctuations for the microemulsion cubic phase were analyzed using a phase-averaged value of the heat capacity ratio of the two components. The quadratic variation of the temperature for the microemulsion cubic phase is well established; however, the nature of the temperature variation for the microemulsion hexagonal phase is not clear yet. The surface tension for both the cubic and the hexagonal phase was found to be positive, which indicates an overall liquid-liquid-solid-solid type of transition. The significance of the presented methodology is the capability of probing the critical behavior of nonfluorescent systems with LIF.U.S. Military Plans to Ban Female Flight Officers
The U.S. military wants to ban female officers from flying combat missions because their hormonal cycles “could affect their ability to react quickly to potential emergencies,” according to a recent study on possible war casualties.
Calling the policy “a step backward in time,” the study by the Rand Corporation concluded that the ban on women flying combat could become a costly policy, both in terms of injury and death, and in terms of a unit’s ability to effectively perform its duties.
The study and policy review was prompted by the 1993 ban on women serving in combat positions and includes analysis of military effectiveness, the possible effect on unit cohesion and morale, logistical factors, and the long-term impact on future military goals.
