Layers

Layers in Photoshop can be thought of as folders or packages of the image. Layers are made of pixels (and therefore are raster images) and can contain or cover areas of the image below or above the layer. When you create a layer, the pixels in the layer are covered over by other pixels in the image. The area covered by a layer doesn’t simply cover the area — it is the area and therefore has its own image ( _alpha channel_ ).

Creating a new layer

You create a new layer by using the New Layer icon that appears in most layers. The layer is initially empty. (See Figure 4-1.) You can use the New Layer icon to create a new layer anywhere in the active image.

After you create a new layer, you add a caption and name it, as shown in Figure 4-2, and then draw on the new layer.

Before you create a new layer, you can make the layer visible or invisible, or you can lock it. Once a layer is visible, you can modify it with image effects, as well as layer styles.

Step 1: Install Photoshop Elements

Download and install the Photoshop Elements version that you’re going to use to your computer and follow the installation instructions.

Step 2: Edit and Touch Up Photos

After installing Photoshop Elements, click on the File menu and then choose Open to open your original image. The image should open in Photoshop Elements.

You should now have 2 tabs at the top of your screen: Edit and Adjust.

The following are steps to edit your image with Photoshop Elements:

Step 2A: Filter Elements

The first task in the “Filter Elements” panel is to correct the problems in your images.

Aperture and Shutter:

In this step, it’s best to have your images undistorted (straight off the camera, if you’re shooting in RAW). This will ensure you get sharp and well-balanced photos.

If your camera is equipped with a lens meter, you can set both aperture and shutter speed while composing your photo. This will ensure you get the right exposure. If you don’t have a lens meter, you will need to use the regular exposure meter. It’s on your DSLR’s back left-hand side. In my experience, the meter is relatively consistent and will give you a good starting point.

Once you get the exposure correct, it’s time to remove the unwanted distractions.

Filters:

In this step, you can enhance your photos using Filters. Filters include the following:

— Photo: If you have what is known as an “all purpose” photo, then the Photo Filter will be the best for you. Using this filter you can correct colors, change the saturation, contrast and brightness, lighten or darken the image, fix spots and scratches,

I am using Typeahead for iOS and wondering what the best way to keep a map of the typed names so that on change you can update the query/filters and actually do some stuff (as the documentation doesn’t really explain how it works).
I was thinking of using User.current but it’s not working.
