Best Free Photo Editing Software
If you don’t want to upgrade to Photoshop, or you want to edit images without paying a monthly fee, then you can turn to free photo editing software. Since there are a ton of free photo editing apps out there, we’ve listed the best (according to CNET staff members and our independent research) in this article.
Most people tend to stick with good, quality images, however, many tend to go too far in the editing process and end up with over-exposed or brightened/darkened images that do not exhibit the colors and intensity of the original photo. The free Photoshop alternatives listed below are much less intimidating than a full version of Photoshop, and a number of them are very well designed.
2. GIMP
GIMP, or the GNU Image Manipulation Program, is open-source and is one of the most flexible image editing tools for computers with modest processing power. It is available for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X, and its web-based version is available on a number of platforms including: Android, iOS, Linux and the Web. It has undergone several versions since its creation in 1996, most of which are compatible with the latest software features.
GIMP has a simple, easy-to-use interface and has many features, including layers, paint tools, filters and the ability to create and edit millions of assets on the fly. It is very easy to use and not always compatible with other software packages.
GIMP can be used to edit text, vector graphics, photographs, line drawings and more. You can add camera or scanner support, and create a site-wide art gallery. I don’t see anyone else’s, so I’ve had a chance to run some tests and I think I’ve figured it out. I’m not positive, but from what I can tell it’s not a hardware issue.
In the BIOS I chose the option that gave the most Intel support, and Windows chose the AMD CPU and HD, but I didn’t touch any of the RAID settings. On the other hand, on two of the disks in the system, I left the MBR partitioning and set the type to GPT, and marked one of the drives as “bootable” and marked the other as “raid”.
I cannot recall if I did this or not, but it’s possible that this is not the actual cause.
Well, whatever the case, the system booted into the Windows disk and from there I proceeded to run DiskPart to do a repair of the boot disk. As it happens, the problem didn’t show up during the repair operation.
When it came time to replace the old HDDs with new SSDs I did so, but I decided that the best way to remove the old HDDs was to physically disconnect them from the system and move them out of the way. When I plugged them back in, I unplugged the power from the old HDDs before rebooting.
The system then went into a repair mode, that seemed to be stuck at about 70% of completion. I started the system, left it for a while and when I came back it was hung at “Starting Windows” with no progress indication, a screen black status bar, and a mouse. The system still had the mouse pointer. I waited for about 10 minutes, then, thinking that nothing else was going to happen, I powered off the system.
Upon powering back on, it took about 5 minutes for the system to boot, but it seemed to think that Windows was still installed. The disk that booted was the new SSD that I installed.
Since the issue never came up during the repair operation, I’m wondering if the fact that the old HDDs were removed from the system had something to do with it.

How to maintain data integrity at connections with SQL Server?
I am using a SQL Server database (not in a SQL Azure instance). At the moment I am using SQL Server Express but I will eventually be using SQL Server Pro. I am using Spring JDBC for a Java application to read/write data and I am using a proprietary ORM from a 3rd party that mapperizes the data to and from a relational database using Spring JDBC. The ORM does not use identity-inserts but it does use a CREATE TABLE statement for every object. The problem is this forces me to always do a “Select * from my_table” at the start and end of every query. That doesn’t sound right to me. I prefer to have the data in a table that has a primary key that links the rows together, something like:

description VARCHAR(255),
PRIMARY KEY (product_id)
)
The point of the PK is so that when a new row is added (i.e. “INSERT INTO product VALUES (1,’product1′,’product description’)”) that it always stores a unique ID across the whole product table.
I am wondering if there is a way to configure SQL Server Express to behave like this? If not I am guessing that Spring JDBC will generate its own identity integer for each new row it inserts and I will have to supply my own PK.

Sure, you’re looking for GUID columns or sequences.

To insert a new row, you would write:
INSERT INTO Product(ProductId, Name, Description) VALUES(NEWID(), ‘product1’, ‘product description’)
Obviously, it’s not really ideal if you want to start using identity values immediately. If you’re using Entity Framework, you could look into Computed Properties.
