(Original work published 2007) In this paper, the fundamentals and important characteristics of the circulating arc reactor are reviewed and the possibility of its application for the destruction of wastes and synthesis of fuel gas are discussed.

Air, power, fuel and profits: Blast Furnace Engineering. The design and erection of blast furnaces has always been very complex, with limited success, thanks to the unavailability of machines which could ease the operations. Some authors have already pointed out the presence of manual skills and a knowledge of traditional manual methods which are essential to reach the required level of reliability. In particular, during their erection, they require – besides the direct human skills of an artisan, the skills of the main operators.

895. In the case of an accident the heat must be quickly dissipated and the different temperatures must be quickly determined. The thermal insulation of the vessel and a good distribution of hot gases throughout the vessel must be ensured. The heat transfer takes place through the walls in the case of a single-wall vessel, and through the floor in the case of a double-wall vessel. In the heat transfer analysis, the physical conditions and values for the materials and thermal conductivity of the material and gases are required. A novel batch-type furnace was designed, assembled and tested on the basis of the similarity with the furnace proposed for MICROMEL TOÇA, an ETI (European for Innovative Technology) project. The tests were carried out in a pilot plant of 6 m³. The experiments of a gasification of rice husks were performed. The gasification was carried out in a two-step process, in which the first step involved thermal pre-treatment of rice husks in a gasified medium, and the second step involved gasification in a novel furnace. The outcomes of the experimental investigations showed that the gasification process yielded a gas (black liquor) with combustible properties and a rich coal-like substance. The composition of the gas obtained from pre-gasification of rice husk consisted of: H2-0.50, C-30.23, H2S-2.00, CH4-0.10, CO-13.89, CO2-14.66, N2-2.63,
