Gardner and Stokstad work more in terms of gospels, avoiding a jumble of individual examples to tell instead a broader, chronological story of the global art world. They do this in a number of ways: first, they present artists, periods, and movements not by emphasizing individual paintings but by classifying them into related groups. As I have already mentioned, this approach is likely to be more congenial to students less familiar with the art of their own (and likely to be) countries. Second, the authors eschew the use of source materials. Not that they don’t acknowledge them as evidence and justification, but rather that they dispense with them. Because the text does not provide systematic source notes, it is virtually impossible for a reader to check these assertions or contradict them. In the end, students will hardly be able to assess a particular assertion or conclusion as more accurate than another. The net effect of this approach is to make the reading of the Big Three very passive. It’s not a criticism; this is a feature not a bug. Indeed, it may work more effectively for some students than the other methods.

Finally, one overarching consideration must be the need for more perspectives in the world of art. More voices should be allowed to speak, and more countries represented. We have seen that it is only through an appreciation of the cultural and economic diversity of the world that we might build a global art history. As much as possible, representations of non-Western cultures need to be incorporated into curricula. And to allow them to do their own talking, much as we have seen them do it so well in places like China and Russia, the Big Three must be redone with an eye to global matters. That vision of a global art history began with Roy Pilcher, and it was partially realized in his efforts in the 1920s and 1930s. I don’t have the opportunity to see which way Pilcher might be leading us in recent years, but a reworking of Gardner and Stokstad may be warranted.
