Optimized DataStructure for a game, a Tree.AVL Tree

I have created a game with lots of actors and monsters. I then create the obstacles too. I have a big issue there.
The obstacles are created by saving a big matrix with the obstacle at the same place as the Actors x times y is the size of the obstacle.
Now i have a big matrix is about 70k entries.
The problem i have is that i use a std::map with a shared_ptr. The main problem is that I don’t know how to remove items from the map. Right now i can remove items from the map with std::map::erase but i have to create an object to erase. This is a no go.
So that i am wondering for the best way to make this.
A data structure that is efficient and fast as i need to update the obstacles continuously.
Before someone ask me: Yes i am doing it the right way in the beginning.

At this point in time, I would probably choose a search tree structure.

Also, std::list and std::deque, while slower than search trees, are easier to implement and definitely more versatile.
You can almost certainly do the same thing in a list as you can in a search tree. You’d just need to iterate through the list in a depth-first-search fashion to remove an item. There’s a convenient C++ class to do that sort of thing:
stl_list::iterator find(const value_type& val) const

2) Speaker volume in the right channel appears to be too high
I’d prefer not to use the built-in amplifier in my room (for speakers I use radio shack’s. $60 speaker cables from Murray) for this one, since they don’t take the load well. My guess is that the speaker wire is dirty/stressed from the kids and the way I use my room. I’d like to deal with that. I also noticed that if I use the volume buttons on my phone, not the volume rocker on the remote or on my Stereo (I already ripped out all my cables), the remote kills the sound on the Stereo which makes me think that the internal amplifier that ships with the HDTV isn’t very strong.

3) The backlight on the remote is not very bright
You can see my entry for a better backlight, but I’ve found that anything that is too bright is annoying to me. You may want to go with a darker color than they list though.

4) Perfectionist/Wannabe PRO QUALITY
If you feel that you need a perfectly running TV, then consider a Trilux. These are made in Korea, far from China, and I’ve had no issues with the motors, etc. (I’ve been ordering off of them for about 5 years). I used to care a great deal about this kind of thing and think that I had trouble with my TV’s because they were too good, but now I’m very happy with the ones that I own.

5) EASY TO CAMP WITH
I have to admit that I do indeed take my TV camping. It’s far lighter than any other TV I know of. You don’t have to worry about whether or not it can operate
