the ideal of the great yogis of india is to make the individual a conscious part of the cosmic whole by making him or her a complete person. to the great yogi, the individual is an expression of the cosmic life. he or she does not experience the individual as an isolated and different entity, a distinct and separate being. rather, the great yogi sees the individual as an expression of the universal life. the cosmic soul is one with the individual soul. the entire universe is one with the individual soul. the great yogis, therefore, are universalists who believe in the unity of the universe and the individual. they have an in-depth knowledge of the self and are able to express themselves in a variety of ways.

i take a vow that i will live in solitude, that i will not eat food prepared by others, and that i will not take off my clothes except when i am alone. i will not take a bath or bathe myself in others company, i will not go to a perfumed room, and i will not touch any woman except her who knows the way of a yogi (bengal nights, 48).
