More than 30 years later, AutoCAD continues to be a popular design tool, with new and upgraded versions launched each year. AutoCAD 2016, released this month, continues to improve upon previous versions.

Autodesk’s CEO, Dirk Ahlborn, recently spoke with BYTE about AutoCAD 2016. Here are the highlights of his interview.

BYTE: What are some of the new features in AutoCAD 2016?

Dirk Ahlborn: First, we really focused on improving productivity. We were pretty much obsessed about that. A lot of work has gone into [getting] you productive, much more so than ever before. In previous versions, we put an emphasis on task switching and good usability. You’d create a model and work on it, and then find yourself switching back and forth between different tasks.

In AutoCAD 2016, you’re productive the whole time. You start a task and finish it without thinking about it. So for instance, I’d draw a line. The line is moving, and I don’t even know. I’d just say, “okay, I have to move this line, make it continuous,” and off I go.

On the screen, I can see a little tool tip that says, “continuous,” and I click on it, and bam! It’s continuous. I can draw lines, rectangles, circles, circles with arcs, circles with straight lines—oh, and let me just say the number of tools [added]. [It’s] more than 200 new features.

BYTE: What are some of the improvements in speed and responsiveness?

DA: You work faster, because you don’t have to be looking at the screen. We’ve done a lot to allow you to be productive—that’s one of the things that makes you more productive.

The other thing that makes you more productive is the fact that you can do other things at the same time. You’re not switching back and forth between various tasks, and I do different tasks while I’m editing. If you are using the toolbox and you want to edit an entity, you don’t have to switch away to it. You don’t have to go to another window. Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg has expressed frustration with some of the criticism he’s received over the past few months. He said:

The debate about the future of the internet has gotten more polarized, with people on both sides who just don’t understand why we are trying to build something that is so new.

Hughes said the goal for Facebook was to “go out, build the fastest company in the world, and take over everything else.”

We want to make sure that Facebook is now able to serve as the right platform for commerce and services in the way that we know it to be. But we don’t know what that looks like yet and there’s a debate about what that looks like.

Hughes also took shots at blockchain technology saying that it is the “scalability problem” that makes distributed ledgers so interesting.

“I can guarantee that if Facebook went down it would not be taken over by Facebook, but would continue to be a free and open internet.”

Mark Zuckerberg has recently said that the company plans to start moving more services to its own decentralized network.
