History

AutoCAD has been in continuous development since its introduction in 1982. The product used a 32-bit X11 graphics interface to deliver the first editions. As the first products to use a 32-bit graphics card, they worked well with a broad range of hardware and color display systems and provided an inexpensive development environment.

AutoCAD was a 32-bit product running on a 32-bit computer. A 64-bit version was released in 1994 with 64-bit data types, addressing, and memory. This allowed AutoCAD to be installed on faster computers that had greater memory capabilities. At the same time, 64-bit AutoCAD offered better performance and faster development environments. As AutoCAD evolved, the 32-bit version remained the oldest version and was kept only for backward compatibility and compatibility with legacy drawings.

With the release of AutoCAD 2004, the development was focused on making better use of the 64-bit architecture. The new software architecture improved software performance and doubled the number of units per instruction, resulting in faster execution of many geometric calculations.
