AutoCAD is a well-established and highly successful product. By 2014, AutoCAD had sold an estimated 50 million copies in the global market, and the total number of users had reached over 6 million.
With the launch of AutoCAD R14 in 2019, AutoCAD has undergone a significant overhaul, introducing new features, tools, and APIs. Along with the new release, AutoCAD also announced the discontinuation of the non-commercial version (AutoCAD LT), which will not be further updated.

With AutoCAD R14, users are presented with a design and drafting experience unlike any AutoCAD version before.
AutoCAD 2020 and beyond: new features
AutoCAD R14 is not the first version of AutoCAD to include new features. Many Autodesk customers are already familiar with most of the new features introduced in AutoCAD 2016, and AutoCAD R14 only includes a few new features.
Some of the new features in AutoCAD R14 include:
The Ability to Draw 2D Lines
With the introduction of the new 2D tools, AutoCAD R14 adds the ability to draw lines in both 2D and 3D space. You can draw lines in any orientation, including parallel, perpendicular, or at an angle to one another. You can also create intersecting lines, and set any of the following properties: color, linetype, lineweight, linetype pattern, color pattern, dash pattern, or pattern.
The new 2D lines can be used with any of the 2D objects available in the drawing, including blocks, text, arrows, circles, ellipses, arcs, splines, Bézier curves, beams, and vertices. With the exception of blocks, all 2D objects are also available in 3D space.
You can also apply properties to 2D lines. These properties include units, axis, horizontal and vertical alignments, angle (degrees), and a number of other properties.
The ability to draw lines in 2D space is a major change from previous AutoCAD versions.
3D Constrained Editing
AutoCAD R14 introduces constrained editing (also known as project-constrained editing). This feature gives users the ability to constrain the editing to a specific viewport (or other subset of the
Raster (or raster image) format support through the DGN (DWG) file format and that of the EPS file format.
Support for the TIFF and other formats that support a color table.
Support for importing and exporting 2D and 3D models in the VRML file format.
Support for JavaScript scripting.
Although AutoCAD has an object-oriented language layer, it uses an earlier, procedural language, referred to as AutoLISP for its implementation of object-oriented features. This language is similar to BASIC and EPL, and was historically the language used for customization of AutoCAD for many years. The current release of AutoCAD also supports a Visual Basic-like language, also referred to as Visual LISP, which is implemented using Microsoft Visual C++ and VB.NET. Visual LISP is similar to the VBA language used by Microsoft Office applications such as Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and others. The Visual LISP compiler is included in AutoCAD’s.NET Extensions and can be used in most Windows applications. This is where AutoCAD objects (including layers) are created.
Many functions (including macros) are only available in a scripting environment. Scripting is also called programming and it allows for instructions to be written by people with minimal AutoCAD skill. AutoCAD has several scripting engines. It was one of the first CAD systems to support JavaScript and the first CAD system to support Visual LISP.
Python programming language is installed as the scripting language for AutoCAD. Its integration with AutoCAD was introduced in the 2018 version of AutoCAD. It allows users to easily interact with a host of AutoCAD-related entities, e.g. different types of layers, blocks, lists, etc. Python is freely available and can be installed from the Python installer.
Visual Studio Tools for AutoCAD provides Visual LISP via Visual LISP Compiler.
The current release of AutoCAD supports:
Layers for visualizing CAD data, such as BOM, in a more efficient manner than the traditional approach that works by simply stacking the layers one on top of the other.
A feature for geometric objects that allows drawing of all the different types of objects that are available to be drawn with AutoCAD, such as objects for creating and editing polylines, polygon meshes, arcs, and 3D models.

Users can now work in both Paper and Sketch styles to more easily organize and share common views, views, and project states.
Drawing snapshots capture temporary changes to the drawing, such as arcs, nodes, or dimensions. This feature provides a way to get a drawing snapshot for more than one person to review at the same time.
A new nested view style helps you use the view surface to organize your drawing. The view surface includes an organization toolbar, views, and settings for the current view surface and the drawing as a whole.
