For example, the shape properties of a drawing file, such as its origin, size, or name, are shared among objects.
Records are a fundamental concept in the structure of a relational database. It is the relation between objects. For example, the drawing.dwg file is a record that contains all the objects of the drawing (together with their properties). A drawing.dwg file is also called a “master record” or “core record”.
Records are stored in a database called the drawing database (DDM). A DDM can be opened by any program that can read and write database files. The DDM can be edited manually or by a CAD application.
Drawing Database
The drawings and the drawing database are structured by names. A database name consists of two parts: the name of the folder that contains the drawing files, and the name of the drawing database (DDM). The folder name is the “root name”. The name of the drawing database is “root”, “the root”, or “Root”.
For example, the Root.DAT file contains the “root” of the drawing database, the drawing.dwg file contains the drawing and the drawing database files, and the files in the drawing.dwg and Root.DAT files share the Root name.
