History

AutoCAD was first released in December 1982, as a 3D drafting and editing software program. The company was founded in 1982 by Charles Simonyi, Don Becker, Michael A. Wolfe, and Rich Watson. It was originally named Pegasus Systems to reflect the design goals of SGI to build an integrated environment that was easy to use and flexible in its design and applications. The company name was changed to AutoDesk in 1983. In its early years, AutoCAD was distributed via SGI’s mail-order sales system for the SGI Model 2 workstation, Model 4 workstation, and Model 6 workstation.

AutoCAD, like other CAD programs, was originally designed for desktop computers with separate graphics hardware. This led to slow performance, and the lack of a clear path for a user to use their current software to transition to an AutoCAD-specific workstation.

AutoLISP, Visual LISP, VBA and ObjectARX, plus macros and custom functions written in any of these languages can be used to automate the creation of almost any aspect of AutoCAD, from databases of parameters to formulas for generating models, from task sequences to custom commands.

The most common use of macros and custom functions is for programmatic creation of drawings. These can include performing specific actions in a drawing or reading attributes from the current drawing into the macros or custom functions. They can be used to create custom tools, or even to create components as text, tables, or drawings. They can also be used to create content in a drawing, such as walls, rooms, doors, or windows, which can then be annotated with text and dimension.

Macros and custom functions are limited to a fixed number of lines and/or columns, so are not suitable for performing calculations on huge drawings.

A large number of third-party developers have also provided custom AutoCAD plugins. Many of these are available on the Autodesk Exchange Apps and Autodesk Exchange App Market.
