AutoCAD is used for creating drawings for architectural, mechanical, electrical, civil, industrial and construction applications. The user works at a computer screen rather than at a drafting table. The first public release of AutoCAD, referred to as version 1, was released in December 1982.[1] Initially, the software was released only on Microsoft MS-DOS PCs and Apple Macintosh computers. After the release of the first public version, Autodesk continued to refine the software by releasing updates regularly, especially to the MS-DOS version of AutoCAD.

In 1992, Autodesk launched the first of a series of cross-platform open-source CAD programs, the company’s Postscript-based rendering system, which was known as the AutoCAD PostScript-based renderer (APSBR). The first release of APSBR was the 3.0 release in 1993.

In 1999, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2000, a Windows-based version of AutoCAD, as part of the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system. AutoCAD 2000 was the first version of AutoCAD released for Windows, replacing the earlier version of AutoCAD for DOS.
